Earlham College is seeking a Design Career Coach to join our team

Summary:

The mission of the Center for Career Education is to empower students to imagine, design, and pursue an Epic journey that leads to a purposeful life and meaningful career.

The Center for Career Education (CCE) seeks a compassionate and dedicated Design Career Coach to join our team. The Career Design Coach plays a pivotal role within the CCE by offering holistic student-centered coaching and workshop facilitation from a design thinking framework, with particular focus on supporting students in the processes of self-discovery, early skill development, career exploration and discernment. Additionally, this role will collaborate closely with the CCE Career Strategists, who provide high-touch career coaching focused on supporting students’ career attainment and post-graduation career outcomes.

The Design Career Coach is also instrumental in the development and execution of campus-wide career education initiatives, aligning with Earlham's four-year career discernment framework, known as the Epic Journey. Responsibilities include facilitating design thinking curriculum in Earlham’s New Student Orientation and First Year Seminar courses, connecting students to experiential learning opportunities, and engaging with alumni, Epic Center Directors, faculty, and other stakeholders to enhance meaningful and actionable career exploration experiences.

Essential Functions:

Design Career Coaching (50% of time; approximately 20 hours per week):

  • Provide individual and small group coaching sessions utilizing design thinking principles to guide students through the process of career discernment, exploration, and action.
  • Assist students with exploring and pursuing early internship, research and on-campus student employment opportunities, offering guidance on early resume building, cover letter writing, and interview preparation.
  • Interpret self-assessments (e.g. PathwayU) and other relevant career exploration tools (e.g. EC Connect), leveraging insights to facilitate meaningful career discussions and action plans.
  • Identify, organize, and promote campus-wide career discerning and skill building opportunities, fostering strong connections and student engagement pathways with Epic Centers and other relevant departments.
  • Create and develop student-centered strategies and design thinking resources to aid students in the process of career exploration and discernment.
  • Build productive relationships with alumni, teaching faculty and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate early career discerning experiences and interactions.
  • Share in the responsibility of promoting and implementing Epic Advantage- Earlham’s signature career discernment program.
  • Utilize Handshake for appointment scheduling, tracking and assessment.
  • Share in the responsibility of managing CCE technology tools for career exploration, networking and decision-making (e.g. Pathway U, Handshake, etc.)

Center for Career Education Programs & Events (25%, approximately 10 hours per week)

As an integral member of the CCE team, support Center events and initiatives including Epic Expo, Senior Launch and other signature programs.

Epic Journey Programming (20%, approximately 8 hours per week)

  • Share in the responsibility of facilitating and adapting the Design Your Earlham First-Year Seminar program.
  • Collaborate with other CCE and Epic Center faculty to facilitate career discernment and design thinking programming during Earlham’s New Student Orientation.
  • Lead design thinking workshops and programming for CCE courses (e.g. Epic 171) and signature events (e.g. Sophomore Exploration, Senior Launch, etc.).
  • Participate in campus programming, classroom visits and other initiatives related to the Epic Journey.

Other Duties (5%, approximately 2 hours per week)

  • Participate regularly in regional, national, or international professional development opportunities and networks.
  • Serve on various boards and committees, as appropriate to the CCE and Epic missions.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least introductory (1 year) experience in college-level career advising, coaching and/or a closely related field, such as: counseling, experiential education, internship programming, or human resources.
  • Demonstrated skill in and passion for career coaching, particularly in discernment, exploration and skill building with undergraduate students.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and facilitation skills, particularly in translating the value of the liberal arts into graduate outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship-building skills and experience working with a wide range of constituents, including employers, faculty, students, and alumni.
  • Experience communicating with and supporting people from diverse backgrounds and an expressed commitment to uphold and further Earlham’s Diversity Aspirations Vision Statement.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Clear understanding of and affinity with the purposes and values of a private residential liberal arts college and a demonstrated ability to work with teaching faculty.
  • Experience and comfort with digital tools and technology, including social media.
  • Commitment to high visibility on campus.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced office.
  • Be a positive example and resource to all Earlham Students

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and professional practice with design thinking.
  • Knowledge of or experience in liberal-arts settings in higher education.
  • Experience in program creation, planning, implementation, and assessment
  • Familiarity with the Handshake platform (or another career education-related platform).
  • Master’s degree or graduate study.
