Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The purpose of Chilled Water Systems (CWS) is to produce and distribute chilled water for approximately 155 buildings located at the main campus and two (2) satellite campuses in a cost effective, efficient and reliable manner. Chilled water is produced in two ways. One is by an extensive chilled water generating system – the single, virtual chilled water plant, comprised of four (4) networked chiller plants that are operated as a single virtual system and the second is by stand-alone chillers that are building specific. Additionally, Chilled Water Systems provides electric and steam load balance for Cogeneration Systems. CWS is part of UNC Energy Services.

Position Summary:

The Chilled Water Systems Controls Engineer is responsible for all controls processes and systems, including chillers (water or air cooled), heat exchangers, pumps, cooling towers, distribution systems, and auxiliary components that are essential to the production and distribution of chilled water for the University. This position is required to understand the complex processes associated with production and distribution of chilled water along with operations and maintenance required. This position monitors the operation of the chillers and auxiliaries to determine if the machines are operating efficiently, and implements controls changes and upgrades to improve efficiency. This position analyzes the controls system needs and operations to improve performance and reliability. This position works closely with designers and contractors to plan, implement, and oversee additions, upgrades, and replacement of controls equipment and instrumentation. This position works closely with all the staff for the Chilled Water Department to insure safe and proper operation and control of the chillers and their auxiliary equipment. This position works closely with shop supervisors to determine controls and instrumentation maintenance requirements and scheduling. This position works closely with other departments in Energy Services to determine requirements for long-term planning to sustain the operation. This position works closely with the Chilled Water Mechanical Engineer and programmers to ensure the processes are controlled with accepted standards to maximize plant reliability and availability of the chilled water system and equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

1. Advanced knowledge of utility systems such as chilled water systems, steam systems, power plants, water treatment plants, or other similar industrial systems.
2. Extensive controls, electrical, and instrumentation experience within a utility or similar industrial system.
3. Ability to work independently with little input or direction.
4. Strong computer skills with programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PowerBI.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially regarding technical topics.
6. Strong analytical skills.
7. Strong controls and electrical skills, with mechanical skills being beneficial.
8. Ability to easily multi-task.
9. Strong organizational skills.
10. Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.

This position is designated as Adverse Weather/Emergency Event and Communicable Disease Mandatory (CDM). As such, it is required to report to work during periods of adverse weather (snow, hurricane, etc.) and other University emergencies (pandemic).

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

1. Degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, HVAC systems, Electronics, Engineering Technology, or other technical field.
2. Experience with controls, SCADA systems, Historian systems, and programming.
3. Specific experience with Citect or VTScada.
4. Experience with large, chilled water systems, or a similar utility.
5. Familiarity with cooling towers, chillers, pumps, filtration systems, air handlers, air compressors, and instrumentation.
6. Ability to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot issues with controls, electronics, and mechanical equipment and components.
7. Extensive chilled water knowledge and experience8.Programming experience with DCS and SCADA.
8. Statistics and data analytics experience10.Financial and budgeting experience.
9. Project management experience with medium-sized projects ($100k – $500k).
10. Electrical and controls knowledge/experience in the installation and maintenance of chillers, cooling towers, and pumps.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements:

Strong analytical skills; strong mechanical, electrical, and controls skills; strong computer skills, especially with Excel, SCADA systems, Historians, PowerBI, and similar. Ability to multi-task. Strong Technical communication skills, as well as the ability to deliver information to those without technical skills. Strong organizational skills. Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical documentation. To fully understand systems and controls used in the field, position must have the ability to walk long distances, crouch, climb ladders and stairs, carry equipment and instrumentation up to 50 lbs., reach above your head, crawl over or under piping, ductwork, and other potential obstacles. This position is designated as Adverse Weather/Emergency Event and Communicable Disease Mandatory (CDM). As such, it is required to report to work during periods of adverse weather (snow, hurricane, etc.) and other University emergency. As a CDM, this position must report to work should the University experience a pandemic or other similar event.
