Founded in 1950, our Department of Maternal and Child Health is one of the world’s leading academic departments for research, teaching and practice. We are dedicated to improving the health of women, children and families – domestically and globally. Our teaching program provides students with broad exposure to maternal and child health population needs and priorities, as well as with the skills to become leaders of tomorrow. Currently the department has 31 faculty members, 20 of whom have primary appointments in Maternal and Child Health (MCH). Complementing these faculty are four emeritus members, and more than 65 adjunct faculty, many of whom hold leadership positions in MCH research and practice settings. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our department, faculty and staff research interests and activities span the full array of issues and areas of focus for the maternal and child health population. Our initiatives are designed to create new knowledge and directly improve the health of this population.

Position Summary:

The Department of Maternal & Child Health, in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for an open rank tenure-track position. The successful candidate will work with the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI) to facilitate and contribute to project design and applied research, promote inclusive excellence, secure funding for CGBI projects, and establish their own research program.

Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute delivers sound, evidence-based, equitable, and inclusive lactation support locally and globally through education, training, and action-oriented research. We advocate through the translation and implementation of practice-based research, train and partner with health care, early care and education, public health, community and lactation leaders, and support resource development to comprehensively advance health equity.
Our comprehensive approach includes research, training and engaged scholarship with attention to equity and the reproductive health continuum domestically and globally. Breastfeeding friendly operational and translational research continues to be one of the top priorities at the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute. Current projects include initiatives in the reproductive healthcare continuum, child care, and related community support, with an emphasis on supporting breastfeeding among vulnerable populations as well as supporting the WHO Ten Steps and related breastfeeding programs around the world. All CGBI activities comply with the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

The applicant must have a doctorate (PhD, ScD, DrPH, MD) in a program that provides strong training in breastfeeding-related and breastfeeding program-related analysis and research methodology. Qualitative analysis skills are a priority. Mixed methods expertise is also welcome.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful candidate will have a track record of establishing and collaborating in multidisciplinary, externally funded research programs, and a strong history of scholarly accomplishment, commensurate with their academic rank. Strong methodological and analytical expertise, specifically addressing issues in breastfeeding support, research, and evaluation, are priorities. Attention to equity issues, ideally with global experience in program development and research, is preferred, as is experience in graduate level teaching and mentoring graduate students.
