Benefit Status: Benefited-Union
Campus: UMass Lowell
Department: Music Department
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience
Applications Open: Oct 27 2023
Applications Close: Open until filled

General Summary of Position:

The Department of Music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) of Sound Recording Technology.

A strong record of published research or applied experience and evidence of excellence in teaching are required for a tenured appointment. Significant knowledge of relevant analog audio (large format consoles, outboard equipment) and digital audio technologies (including Pro Tools, plugins, outboard DSP) is required, as is a thorough understanding of audio recording industry segments, current and historic recording theory and practice, and current trends. Evidence of production experience in multitrack recording, sound synthesis, multimedia, event production, audio for film and television, DSP coding (particularly for AU/VST/AAX) and/or related areas are preferred. We also welcome industry experience in an audio-related field. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages with underrepresented groups in the audio community.

Responsibilities include research/scholarship/creative work, teaching, service, student recruitment, and advising. The teaching load for faculty in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences ranges from 2-1 to 3-3, based on research productivity, and will primarily include undergraduate courses in Sound Recording Technology. The successful candidate will work with students at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, and will have opportunities to shape the future direction of the SRT program.

The Sound Recording Technology program at UMass Lowell was established with the Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology in 1983. The program received NASM accreditation in 1984, making it one of the first accredited programs in the US. The program emerged as a top program nationally and maintained a significant international presence. Since the early 1990s, the SRT program has been distinguished as one of the signature programs of the campus, and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Alumni of the program have achieved the highest levels of success in many audio-related industry segments including music production, audio for visual and interactive media (film, television and video games), event audio/live sound, broadcast audio, audio system design, acoustic consultation and design, audio software and hardware design, audio education, and consumer audio fields. Graduates of the SRT program are regularly awarded GRAMMYs, EMMYs, and other industry honors—and they also are integrated into the fabric of our regional communities and audio-related companies.

The program combines studies in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, and advanced mathematics with traditional studies in music and numerous courses related to the art and technology of recording. Small class sizes ensure that students work directly with the permanent faculty throughout their SRT studies. The SRT program also offers a minor in SRT available only to Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science majors, providing audio-specific education to those wishing to work in audio-related fields.

The SRT program is housed In the Department of Music, which is part of the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS) is the largest academic unit of the University, with 12 academic departments, close to 5,000 students, and over 200 full-time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring over 100 new faculty members, achieving a 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and adding several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell is committed to increasing diversity in its faculty, staff, and student populations, as well as curriculum and support programs, and promoting an inclusive environment. We seek applicants who can contribute to that goal and can identify strengths in this area.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant audio-related field (ABD will be considered) or Master’s degree and commensurate recording/audio industry experience equivalent to a doctorate.
  • A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publication or juried creative work.
  • A successful record of teaching experience at the university level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active or past service roles to appropriate organizations in the field including but not limited to the Audio Engineering Society, Art of Record Production, IASPM, CAS, and MPSE

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Review of applications will begin December 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. However, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applications is received.
