Position: The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources (RSENR) at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applicants for a full-time, 9-month, Endowed Associate or Full Professor who has a demonstrated commitment to promoting academic excellence in the field of sustainability science and policy, with an emphasis on energy systems. We seek a creative individual with demonstrated leadership experience, a passion for teaching, strong quantitative skills, and interdisciplinary interests in areas such as energy systems design and planning, energy policy, renewable technology integration, energy resilience and justice, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Scholars with expertise in decision analysis, data science, equity, law, and/or the evolution of institutions in the energy sector are especially encouraged to apply.The tenure home for this position will be RSENR, with a secondary appointment expected to be pursued in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS). Interdisciplinarity is important to this professorship. The successful candidate will be expected to advance interdisciplinary research and educational collaborations bridging programs in Sustainability, Ecology, and Policy (SEP), Environmental Sciences (ENSC), and Engineering.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to teaching, research, and service. At the undergraduate level, the successful candidate will teach courses in the SEP program relevant to their expertise. The successful candidate will advise undergraduate SEP students, and mentor and guide students in projects, internships, and independent studies. They will also be expected to teach and supervise graduate students both as lead advisor and on thesis/dissertation committees. The position involves leading a high-impact, extramurally funded research program with a strong international reputation. The successful candidate will have a record of community-engaged scholarship, demonstrating capacity to participate in energy and climate change policy discussions, ideally at multiple scales (e.g., state and national). They will also build relationships between UVM and the broader U.S. (and possibly global) energy community, leading to impactful research communicated in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets. Service expectations include contributing to school and university committees, and the energy systems profession at-large.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies, Energy Systems Design and Policy, Engineering and Public Policy, Sustainability Science, or related fields. Applicants should have the capacity to deliver high-quality, impactful teaching, mentoring, and advising of undergraduate and graduate students, and the ability to develop a successful, funded research program as demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed publications. We seek candidates with impactful research experiences and creative and innovative approaches to scholarship. Candidates should also have experience developing collaborative relationships with university and external partners (state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and/or private industry) and a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational, research, and professional experiences.

The College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) is home to about 120 faculty, 1400 undergraduate students, and 300 graduate students. CEMS is home to CREATE, a convergent research center with 20 faculty across CEMS focused on advancing the next generation of energy and autonomous technologies. CREATE is driven by the rapid changes in today’s power and energy systems, spurred by the aggressive decarbonization and electrification policies in Vermont and beyond. CEMS also has strengths in data science and hosts the Vermont Complex Systems Center. Finally, UVM has a joint appointment agreement with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
