Job Summary

Advisors build partnerships and develop interpersonal relationships that guide, advocate for, and empower NTC students to achieve their full potential for success in diverse environments. Advisors proactively provide case management services to ensure academic success, retention and program completion for NTC students. Advisors serve students in-person and/or virtually throughout the NTC district and beyond.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as point of contact for students being admitted to assigned programs. Meet with new students to develop rapport, establish career and educational goals, review degree requirements, create academic plans, select courses, and provide resources.

  • Engage in proactive advising to identify and support students who may benefit from advising services. Monitor student performance to provide timely intervention for students struggling with coursework and/or attendance.

  • Utilize proactive and innovative strategies to provide case management from program acceptance to completion, ensuring timely, appropriate, and accurate information regarding program of study, program requirements, course content, course selection, prerequisites, recommended course load, credit for prior learning processes, retention supports, transfer and career services, and graduation.

  • Develop appropriate action plans to guide students through their program curriculum, to be aware of external credentialing requirements, and helping them achieve desired career and/or transfer goals.

  • Assess student motivation regarding program choice, providing referral to staff or programs that can help students to a more appropriate program.

  • Actively engage with students, faculty, and staff throughout the college, maintaining a physical presence particularly in areas where students commonly gather.

  • Remain knowledgeable about college resources and academic requirements to create course and student success plans.

  • Connect with staff serving students in academic and non-academic resources throughout the College to ensure awareness of and smooth transitions to these services, including but not limited to Financial Aid, Registrar, Career Services, Resource Navigation, Accommodations and Accessibility, Academic Resource Center, Library, etc.

  • Collaborate with faculty and resource staff to develop effective and timely solutions, resolving issues directly with students with minimal escalation and referral.

  • Partner with faculty for student success, including collaborative discussions between faculty/advisor/student, review of student progress, identification of at-risk students, feedback on course scheduling, and development of innovative retention strategies.

  • Assist students in complying with academic policies and procedures, appeals, and processes.

  • Contact students who have not re-enrolled or completed their program to support retention and completion initiatives. Utilize the Advising Communication Plan to reach out to students at prescribed times to support recruitment and retention strategies.

  • Participate in team meetings, professional development activities, and college-wide committees as assigned and appropriate.

  • Participate in and support NTC activities to promote student engagement and sense of belonging.

  • Assist in planning, promoting, and facilitating events that support student engagement and success, such as information sessions, panels, workshops, etc.

  • Coordinate advising activities for program students at Regional Campuses in collaboration with Career Coaches and Regional Campus staff using all available methods of service delivery.

  • Comply with federal, state, and NTC student policies and procedures, including FERPA.

  • Accurately document student interactions and situations in concise and timely manner.

  • Complete activity reports and enter data for retention, tracking and grant accountability.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

In limited circumstances, NTC may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.

Education: Bachelor's Degree

  • Degree in education or related field.

  • Preferred: Three years related work experience in a higher education institution.

Experience: 3 Years

Additional Experience Information:

  • Experience in advising, career planning, and placement services.

  • Knowledge and understanding of college admissions, career services, financial aid, and transfer processes.

  • Working knowledge of current technologies and computer software.

  • Ability to plan, organize, promote, and implement campus events and educational workshops in multiple modalities.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated skill in interpersonal communications and human relations with populations of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.

  • Ability to travel to various locations within the district.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in academic advising in higher education.

  • Teaching experience preferred.
