Infusion Services and Hub Description

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) offers comprehensive outpatient services, including ambulatory clinics for managing complex disease states requiring specialty infusion therapies. The clinics with the highest infusion patient volumes include neurology, IBD, rheumatology, dermatology, pulmonology, immunology, and allergy. OSUWMC operates six infusion sites across the greater Columbus area, including one that is open exclusively on weekends. Additionally, a centralized infusion hub coordinates external infusions to home and other infusion suites. Beyond internal infusions, OSUWMC collaborates with several homecare infusion companies, offering a wide range of options to meet patient needs.

Scope of Position

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Ambulatory Infusion, the Infusion Hub Pharmacist ensures seamless integration between pharmacy staff and healthcare providers, overseeing home infusion care, managing referrals, coordinating medication access, site placement, and reimbursement services, and developing cost-effective care programs. This role involves 50% remote work for responsibilities related to ambulatory infusion coordination and 50% on-site requirements as an ambulatory infusion pharmacist, responsible for verifying medication orders, checking prepared medications, overseeing dispensing, and conducting clinical patient reviews. The pharmacist also provides drug information, screens for drug interactions, participates in relevant committees, and maintains compliance with quality and regulatory standards while delivering exceptional customer service.

Position Summary:

The Infusion Hub Pharmacist coordinates all facets of infusion referrals encompassing medication access, infusion site placement, reimbursement services, and comprehensive medication management. Duties include, but are not limited to, developing, implementing, and monitoring programs that guide and support the provision of high quality, cost effective pharmaceutical care; maintaining appropriate quality indicators; ensuring compliance with appropriate patient care, business practice, and regulatory/accreditation agencies; adhering to customer service standards; encouraging and supporting service orientation by other staff; medication order approval and distribution; assurance of appropriate dose, route, frequency, and duration of therapy; clinical profile review to assess safety and accuracy of medication services; coordination of patients’ pharmaceutical needs with physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses.

Minimum Qualifications:

For Hire: Bachelor’s Degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited college of pharmacy is required. This position must be a licensed pharmacist in good standing with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, or eligible for licensure in Ohio. Post-graduate residency training, and a significant track record in scholarship and teaching are preferred.

Job Relationships:

Supervisory Responsibility: Oversees pharmacy technicians and new pharmacists training in the area. Provides information relative to staff performance for use in performance evaluations. Documents and discusses inadequate performance with the above individuals when appropriate (e.g., tardiness, improper techniques, etc.).

Contacts: Daily contact with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians. Routine contact with administrative personnel in the Pharmacy Department.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:

  • Occasionally lift up to 30lb objects (i.e. IV admixtures, stock boxes) from one level to another.
  • Occasionally move up to 30lb objects (i.e. IV admixtures, stock boxes)
  • Occasionally push 30lb objects (i.e. biohazard boxes, stock carts) so it moves away from or stays in front
  • Occasionally pull 30lb objects (i.e. biohazard boxes, stock carts, crash carts) so that the object moves toward you
  • Perform the following tasks (i.e. filling prescriptions, preparing IV admixtures, monetary transactions)
  • Frequently fill prescriptions, placing stock
  • Constantly answer telephones, computer order-entry, billing functions
  • Frequently obtain medications from stock.
  • Constantly obtain medications from various heights (floor to 8'), obtaining supplies, preparing IV admixtures.
  • Constantly handle (i.e. separating IV admixtures, grasping syringes and other supplies, opening medication bottles, answering telephones)
  • Constantly work with unit dose pharmaceuticals, dial telephones, manipulate syringes and other pharmacy supplies, package pharmaceuticals, use a typewriter, and a computer keyboard
  • Produce clear, intelligible speech 100% of the time (i.e. communication with hospital and pharmacy staff about medication orders, and also patients)
  • Understand verbal communication 100% of the time, (i.e. communication with hospital and pharmacy staff about medication orders, and patients)

Work Environment

The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. working around moving parts, carts, machines; working with sharps (i.e. needles, syringes, etc.), medications (i.e. chemotherapy, antibiotics, ionizing radiation, etc), chemicals (i.e. laboratory and/or cleaning agents). Employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks or gloves.
