Microbiology Assistant/ Full-Time

POSITIONSUMMARY: Provide high quality and efficient serviceto patients through timely and efficient performance of culturingspecimens, AFB and gram stain slide preparations, rapid testing andentering results into the LIS system. Responsible for competentlyhandling and processing all Microbiology specimens, ensuringspecimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures to includereceipt, data entry, storage and delivery of specimens to testingareas. Collects nasopharyngeal and throat swabs on outpatients forculture. Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information.Performs Quality Control, simple lab tests, processing blood andother body fluids, sendouts, and other tests as required to adhereto and comply with CAP moderately complex testing requirements.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Highschool diploma or equivalent, medical terminology preferred.
EDUCATION: Highschool diploma or equivalent
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Laboratory Assistant certificationpreferred. Must meet CLIA '88 requirements for performing moderatecomplexity testing as defined in the Federal Register, Vol. 57, No40, Subpart 493.1423.
Valid New Mexico driverslicense.
SKILLS:Proficient at processing specimens and dispensing criticalinformation in accordance with section, laboratory, and hospitalpolicies and procedures. Must be proficient at receiving specimensand following written procedures for processing specimens. Must beable to read and write English and be able to communicateeffectively. Must be able to operate laboratory equipment, computersystems, and manage supply inventory system.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of twoyears in laboratory preferred, including experience withmicrobiology specimen processing, and simple lab tests required.
NATURE OF SUPERVISION:

ENVIRONMENT:
Bloodborne pathogen C: (Routine Exposure Risk. Routineexposure in daily duties. Exposed to potentially infectiousmaterial on a regular basis and is part of the expected job task.)
Generally works in a well lighted, ventilatedarea. Exposure to disagreeable odors, toxic fumes, and high noiselevels and fluctuations in temperatures. Position involves highrisk exposure to carcinogenic, hazardous and flammable chemicals;biohazardous and radioactive materials; sharp needles and blades;infectious diseases; toxic fumes. Subject to mental stress fromworking with infectious materials and reporting carried outindoors, at blood drawing stations, or at a desk, bench or bedside.Occasionally, employees may be required to transport themselves toperform their duties at Health Fairs or a patient's place ofresidence.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS: May be required to work more than astandard shift as dictated by workload, staffing, and equipmentfailure. Sitting, standing, and stooping may be involved throughoutthe entire shift. Work occasionally requires safe waist-highlifting and transferring of pediatric and adult weights may berequired.
