Job Purpose: The Department Chair, in collaboration with the Dean of Learning and Instruction, ensures the workforce relevancy, quality, and continuous improvement of Calbright Business Programs.

Location: Remote, various locations throughout California

Salary Range: Faculty salary schedule placement (depending on qualification and education) + 15% $95,830.65 - $132,067.15

Position Overview

The Department Chair position supports Calbright College's mission of offering competency-based, workforce-relevant programs for the adult learner through high-impact andrological practices in online, skills-based curriculum and assessment practices. In collaboration with the Dean of Learning and Instruction, the Department Chair ensures program quality, workforce relevancy, and continuous improvement of the Business Programs.

The Department Chair provides domain-level leadership to cross-functional faculty teams, applies data-driven program oversight, and ensures alignment with industry standards, accreditation requirements, and workforce needs. This role requires curriculum planning and analysis skills, faculty development, data reporting, and program effectiveness while leading efforts in workforce alignment, competency-based education, and data-informed decision-making.

The Department Chair will foster internal and external relationships, including academic advisory council members, subject matter experts, industry experts, and other partners to enhance student success, program innovation, and institutional growth. The Department Chair will work with cross-functional leadership to help establish operational objectives and to positively impact student outcomes, program quality, enrollment growth, and overall program performance. The Department Chair is also responsible for ensuring student success and meeting key program performance outcomes.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.

  • Ensures program initiatives and decisions are aligned with and serve Calbright's mission and vision.
  • Leads regular program-level meetings to review program quality, continuous improvement, and student success metrics and data.
  • Support Adjunct Faculty in setting annual SMART goals to support student success.
  • Ensure programs meet accreditation standards, state/federal regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Qualified to teach in the appropriate and approved disciplines. Ability to provide coverage and content expertise to the department's programs as needed.
  • Oversee adjunct faculty in the assigned department area, including performing quarterly and annual reviews, approving timesheets, training, mentorship, referring student cases, and assisting with escalations.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and improve the student experience using an equity-centered design approach.
  • Reviews and monitors student and course feedback to ensure the student voice is represented and provides content and program improvement recommendations.
  • Ensure programs incorporate support structures that enhance student retention and completion rates.
  • Lead the program review process by overseeing review cycles, collecting and analyzing data, engaging stakeholders for input, and preparing comprehensive reports to support continuous improvement and informed decision-making.
  • Leads with a data-informed mindset to validate quality, analyze student outcomes data, and contribute to trend analysis and metric tracking across programs.
  • Works with cross-functional teams (including program faculty and staff) to ensure program outcomes, assessment measures, and course content are rigorous, responsive, and relevant to workforce skills and needs.
  • Ensure full-time and part-time faculty are prepared to support both a pilot and public launch of respective programs.
  • Establish program expectations for faculty for quality and effective engagement with students.
  • Lead external advisory councils and industry experts to ensure program alignment with workforce skills and national certifications.
  • Maintain relevancy in the discipline, including but not limited to certifications, professional development, networking, etc.
  • Selects subject matter experts (external professionals) to serve on curriculum and program development projects.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

      • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff, and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in one or more Business discipline areas and 3 years of industry experience.
  • Remains current in the discipline area, holding relevant certifications as appropriate.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in one or more Business discipline areas and 3 years of industry experience.
  • Experience with skill-based or competency-based curriculum.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory or online teaching experience.
  • A combination of three years of increasingly responsible experience in learning and instruction or an industry-relevant position, including two years of administrative or supervisory responsibility.

Working Conditions and Travel

  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time. Although this is a primarily remote position, there may be instances in which you will be required to attend meetings or travel to in-person events.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature.
