Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:The main purpose of the UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina Greensboro through law enforcement and crime prevention. Our officers and employees are highly trained and dedicated individuals whose personal mission is to make sure campus community’s experience at UNCG is not only memorable and successful, but also safe. The police department offers these and other programs to help our Spartans achieve a safe and secure community.
Position Summary:Positions in this banded class direct public safety operations for a University campus or State agency. Employees are responsible for the administration of law enforcement divisions and/or law enforcement auxiliary service units such as patrol, criminal investigation, K-9 units, telecommunication, accreditation, and crime prevention education/outreach. Duties include but are not limited to developing policy and procedures, planning and organizing operations, managing budget development and related resource allocation, and maintaining appropriate relationships with local and State law enforcement agencies and the media. Typically reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police. Work performed in this career band differs from the Public Safety Supervisor since it involves oversight of multiple units, and a higher level of authority.
Senior Police Supervisor:Positions at this level typically lead a uniform patrol shift or squad or serve in a supervisory capacity in criminal investigations in a plainclothes assignment. May also serve in a supervisory capacity in other specialized units outside uniform patrol or criminal investigations at the discretion of the agency head. The recruitment salary for this level is $88,450.
- A minimum of a Bachelors Degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associates degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.
- At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater.
- Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
- Based on guidance from the VP and Chief Human Resources Officer from the system office, applications will also be accepted from those applicants who meet the department’s requirements prior to the EHRA conversion.
- Those requirements are as follows: Candidates should have completed two years of service as a UNCG police officer immediately prior to the announcement eligibility cutoff date; or have completed at least five (5) years of service as a police officer in any jurisdiction.

Key Responsibility:Professional Standards
Essential Tasks:- Interview citizens wishing to file complaints on officers and refer them to the proper Division Commander or Internal Affairs for further action if necessary.
- Forward complaints through the chain of command to the Chief of Police via appropriate Department forms.
- Compile information, research and prepare written proposals for long range departmental planning in areas of staff development, computerization, and upgrading of equipment.

Key Responsibility:Hiring, Background Investigations, and Training
Essential Tasks:- Oversee the department’s recruitment efforts to ensure we are casting a wide net to attract the best possible candidates for vacant positions.
- Work closely with the department’s background investigator to ensure the process is timely and efficient.
- Develop strategies to promote the UNCG Police Department in the best light possible.
- Coordinate the department’s mandatory in-service training in compliance with Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission.
- Coordinate advanced law enforcement training for all sworn and non-sworn personnel. Evaluate additional training based on current trends and best practices.

Key Responsibility:Accreditation
Essential Tasks:- Oversee the department’s compliance with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
- Communicate frequently with the accreditation manager to ensure the department’s policies and procedures remain aligned with those of CALEA.
- Assist in coordinating monthly meetings with the policy review committee.

Key Responsibility:Clery
Essential Tasks:- Oversee the department’s compliance with the Clery Act and coordinate with the Clery Compliance Officer to ensure all CSA’s are trained annually.
- Work with campus partners and outside agencies to ensure they remain compliant with reporting requirements.
