Nurse Manager, Operating Room
Location: Santa Clara, CA, USA

Position Overview:
The Nurse Manager for the Operating Room (OR) oversees a 24-hour department dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care. This role ensures that staff provide accessible, patient-focused, and cost-effective services in full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Responsible for upholding clinical care standards, managing resources and budgets, and leading staff development efforts, this position plays a vital role in advancing care quality and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Department Operations: Lead the daily operations of the OR, potentially across multiple sites, ensuring services meet the highest care standards and comply with the Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission, and all relevant regulations.

  • Patient Care Standards: Establish, maintain, and elevate patient care and service standards to meet or exceed expectations of members and internal stakeholders, driving continuous quality improvement.

  • Process Optimization: Develop, evaluate, and enhance processes that improve patient outcomes and system efficiency across the care continuum.

  • Resource and Budget Management: Oversee budgets to ensure responsible allocation of human and material resources. Regularly assess financial performance, implementing cost-reduction strategies that enhance care quality.

  • Staff Recruitment and Development: Determine optimal staffing needs, manage hiring and training, and support the ongoing development of team members to maintain high competency levels. Effectively address HR, safety, and risk management issues.

  • Policy and Procedure Oversight: Create, implement, and monitor departmental policies and procedures that align with organizational goals, ensuring adherence to high standards and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Quality and Financial Oversight: Lead quality improvement initiatives, maintain care and practice standards, and manage fiscal responsibilities to support department goals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of clinical nursing experience relevant to the OR, including four (4) years in a managerial, supervisory, or leadership role.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; Bachelor's in Nursing or a Master's through a direct-entry MSN program.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Current California RN license at hire.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Additional Skills:
    • Leadership experience in a clinical setting (internal Kaiser Permanente applicants may qualify through roles such as Charge RN, committee involvement, National Certification in specialty areas, or RN Leadership Development).
    • Strong understanding of the Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission, and regulatory compliance.
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
    • ACLS or PALS certification may be required for certain departments.
    • National specialty certification within one year of hire is preferred.
    • Ability to work within a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of prior management experience.
  • Experience in a Magnet/shared governance environment.
  • Experience managing in a unionized setting.
  • A Master's degree is highly preferred.
