POSITION SUMMARY: The NurseExtern will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in theirnursing program in order to provide direct patient care withcompassion, excellence and efficiency. The Nurse Extern works underthe guidance of the RN/ Nurse Leader with assigned patients, inaccordance with CSV hospital guidelines for patient care. The NurseExtern collaborates with other disciplines to achieve overallhealthcare goals and is responsible for adhering to the patientplan of care in order to assist patient processes and outcomes. TheNurse Extern is responsible for competent care of patients in thehospital setting under the guidance of an assigned RN. The NurseExtern functions as a member of the patient care team, experiencingthe complexities of a nursing care delivery model while increasingtheir independence in taking a patient care assignment.
The Nurse Extern reports to the department Nurse leaderand will work within a defined scope of under the directsupervision of an assigned RN. The RN assigned to the Nurse Externwill promote learning experiences that enable the Nurse Extern tocompetently perform nursing care activities in both complex andnon-complex situations.
Requirements
EDUCATION: Currently enrolledin an accredited Nursing program with completion of the programwithin 12 months from hire. Nurse Extern required to graduate fromNursing program and pass NCLEX within 3 months of graduation fromaccredited program.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES:Current BLS issued through American HeartAssociation is required.
SKILLS:
- Excellentcommunication skills
- Ability to read andinterpret technical reports, charts, etc.
- Ability to write concise reports
- Ability to handle a high level of stress and to maintaincomposure under a variety of adverse conditions
- Computer skills required to enter data and generatereports.
HOSPITALEXPANDED DUTIES TRAINING:
- Peripheral intravenous access andremoval
- Recording of I&Os
- Foley Catheter insertion and removal
- NG insertion and removal
- Suture/Staple removal
- Unit appropriatePOCT
- Bedside monitoring, CR, Telemetry,Telesitter, Capnography, Oximetry
- Asappropriate:
- Basic Dysrythmia Course
- De-Escalation Training
EXPERIENCE:

-Responsible to: Reportsdirectly Nurse Manager or designee for essential job duties andday-to-day responsibilities.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Bloodborne pathogens - B
Works irregular hours. Multiplesimultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to x-rays andinfectious diseases such as hepatitis-B and AIDS. In addition, maybe subject to varying unpredictable situations such as violencefrom mentally unstable patients.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Mustbe able to handle emergency/crisis situations, prolonged, extensiveor considerable standing/walking, kneeling, bending, and heavylifting. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. Frequentlylifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients or equipment.Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal limits. Manualdexterity and fine motor coordination required. The work is notonly physically strenuous but can be stressful, sometimes involvinglife-or-death situations and suffering patients.
