Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Assistant Chief of Police, the Police Sergeant protects students, faculty, staff, visitors, property and facilities; enforces the laws and regulations of the City of Rock Hill, State of South Carolina and Winthrop University on university, adjacent and other appropriate properties; and supervises a shift of officers.

Job Summary:

  • Supervises—trains, coaches, counsels, observes, evaluates and disciplines—a shift of officers.
  • Assigns officers to duty and reschedules as necessary to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Conducts routine patrol activities.
  • Issues citations for moving and parking violations.
  • Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic during normal school hours and special events.
  • Assists local jurisdictions as needed.
  • Investigates vehicle accidents and completes and submits accident reports.
  • Investigates larceny cases reported during assigned shift.
  • Completes daily written reports of incidents occurring during assigned shift.
  • Attends court as necessary.
Required Qualifications:

High school diploma; certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the South Carolina Justice Academy; certification as an NCIC Full Function Operator by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division or willingness to obtain and maintain; at least one year of law enforcement experience; and valid driver’s license required. Must be at least 21 years old and reside in South Carolina or be willing to relocate to South Carolina. Must be able and willing to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must pass the state physical examination, qualify semi-annually with a firearm, and successfully complete defensive driving requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary:

Working knowledge of the Rock Hill City Code, the laws and regulations of the State of South Carolina, Winthrop University rules and regulations, and federal civil rights laws. Knowledge of current police methods and practices, Red Cross First Aid, and courtroom and bomb threat procedures. Ability to investigate accidents, disturbances and violations and deal tactfully with members of the campus community and general public. Skilled in weapon firing. Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students and the general public; and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
