This position is for a Research Scientist in the area of mosquito borne disease, mosquito biology, and mosquito-microbiome interactions. The position is housed in the Department of Entomology and in affiliation with the Infectious Diseases Institute. The successful candidate will expand work investigating the interplay between environmental microbes and life history traits in male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, by integrating organismal experiments, molecular biology, and high throughput sequencing. They will also be expected to develop independent projects that build upon their personal research interests. In collaboration with their scientific mentor (the P.I.), the successful candidate will design and execute experiments, analyze data, publish findings in competitive scientific journals, and apply for external funding. They will also mentor junior members of the laboratory to hone their instructional and mentoring skills and enrich their training by attending relevant seminars and colloquia. Funding is available for three years with contract renewal dependent on satisfactory performance. Renewal beyond three years is possible but is contingent on successful acquisition of external funding.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on mosquito microbe interactions.
- Conduct research on insect locomotion including seeking appropriate funding opportunities to support this research.
- Support mentee training and engage in professional development activities.
Minimum Education Required:
Doctorate (Academic) with a Major in the physical or life sciences.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in the physical or life sciences with extensive experience working with mosquitoes or other Diptera.
They must show a strong record of publication and success in funding acquisition. They must also have a strong background in computational biology and bioinformatics, show proficiency in science communication, and be keen to work as part of a team.
