Advanced Patient Care Tech Emergency Department/ PERDiem

POSITIONSUMMARY: The APCT is responsiblefor quick reaction and competent care of patients with emergencysituations that arrive at the hospital. Monitors patients, collectsinformation and documents data. Inserts and removesperipheral intravenous therapy lines under the direction of thephysician/nurse. Performs blood collection, and Foleycatheter placements. Performs wound care and dressing changes;applies plaster and fiberglass splints, casts and tractiondevices. Performs bedside testing such as oximetry,glucometery, and other point of care tests. Operates and monitorspatient monitoring systems specific to unit. Specific dutiesinclude: insures cleanliness of unit, cleans and storesequipment and empties sharps containers. Documents allinterventions and data, communicates with theprimary nurse on findings and interventions.
TheAPCT stocks medical supplies and paper goods; inventories andprocesses broken equipment as required; assists physicians andnurses with procedures under their direction; assures properstorage of E-cylinders (oxygen); organizes care in a manner thatcontributes to the overall quality of the team; and performs otherjob duties as assigned, within their scope of practice. The APCT isa vital part of the ED team and acts as a mentor and preceptor tonew staff.
Requirements
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High Schooldiploma or equivalent plus trade or vocational school inmedical/
surgical patient care.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Current BLS issued through American HeartAssociation is required. Proof of EMT course completion orcompletion of 1st level of nursing school required. Two (2)years of experience as CNA or CMA can substitute for coursecompletion. De-Escalation certification preferred.
SKILLS:
- Must have critical thinking skills and the ability toprioritize quickly
- Knowledge of methods andtechniques of:
- Emergency medicalresponse
- Principles of emergency medicalservice provision
- First aid and lifesupport
- Ability tooperate and maintain emergency medical apparatus andequipment
- Excellent communicationskills
- Ability to read and interpret technicalreports, charts, etc.
- Ability to write concisereports
- Ability to handle a high level ofstress and to maintain composure under a variety of adverseconditions
- Computer skills required to enterdata and generate reports.
EXPERIENCE: One yearEMT, CNA or CMA experience preferred.
NATURE OFSUPERVISION:
-Responsible to: Reportsdirectly to ED Director/ED Clinical Manager or designee foressential job duties and day-to-day responsibilities.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Bloodborne pathogens - B
Works irregular hours. Multiplesimultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to x-rays andinfectious diseases such as hepatitis-B and AIDS. In addition, maybe subject to varying unpredictable situations such as violencefrom mentally unstable patients.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situations,prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking, kneeling,bending, and heavy lifting. Has knowledge of and uses good bodymechanics. Frequently lifts, positions, pushes and/or transferspatients or equipment. Hearing and visual acuity must be withinnormal limits. Manual dexterity and fine motor coordinationrequired. The work is not only physically strenuous but can bestressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations andsuffering patients.
