Who will you be working with?
The Friction Product Line designs and manufactures high-friction and low-friction composition, sintered brake shoes, specialty shoes, and disc brake linings for freight, locomotive and transit vehicles.
How will you make a difference?
The position of Mechanical Designer is in the Engineering Department which is responsible for the design configuration, application engineering and project management activities associated with the development and qualification of brake shoes and disc brake pads for rail vehicles, and other new friction products.
The Mechanical Designer uses CAD software to convert designs from Engineers into technical drawings and is responsible for the design configuration of new and existing products, the proper documentation of the configuration and managing design documentation in accordance with ISO and internal procedures.
What do we want to know about you?
- Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Computer-Aided Drafting, Associate of Mechanical Drafting Design or similar. Bachelor's degree a plus. Similar education considered for candidates with strong CAD drafting/design skills.
- Minimum 5 years CAD experience required, 2D/3D. Proficiency in AUTODESK AutoCAD, Inventor and Vault strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of proper Drafting Standards (such as ANSI/ASME)
- American Design Drafting Association Certification or similar certification.
- Experience with Mastercam CAM software preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as AAR and UIC standards (rail industry), safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
What will your typical day look like?
- Develop detailed design drawings, solid models and specifications for products and components according to established drafting standards using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) software, according to product requirements, internal or external specifications or rough sketches and specifications created by Engineers.
- Lay out and draw schematic, orthographic, or angle views to illustrate functional relationships of components and/or assemblies.
- Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings and concepts.
- Resolve design problems relating to product fit, function or manufacturing.
- Maintain accurate drawing files, master ECRN and master drawing data base lists.
- Assist Project and Application Engineers in the design, development and testing of new products, recording and analyzing data.
- Compare test results with design requirements and/or specifications and make recommendations for changes.
- Design and document fixturing and equipment to support product testing.
- Determine root causes of failures using statistical methods and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods.
- Gather and prepare data for reports and studies.

Work environment will include office, test, manufacturing areas and customer sites. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles on, around and under rail vehicles; outdoor weather conditions (rain, wind, snow, cold, heat) and extreme heat (non-weather). Employee will sometimes perform work in plant or in field that will be dirty. The noise level in the work environment (outside of the office) is usually moderate. Working in field may occasionally require hearing protection.
