The department of The Miami Project has an exciting opportunity for a Part Time Physical Therapist 1 to work at UHealth. The Physical Therapist 1 provides physical therapy and wellness services to patients and clients who have impairments, functional disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes. Moreover, this employee helps patients and clients restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities. The Physical Therapist I collaborates with healthcare teams that include physicians, occupational therapists, and psychologists.

  • Participate in and help manage a research studies within The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis focused on a neuromotor recovery in neurologic population.

  • Delivery therapy in accordance with the study protocols under guidance of Principal Investigator.

  • Occasionally lift, transfer and position study participants.

  • Be present in-person during all assigned research protocols when research participants are performing various protocols to assist the study team with the protocol completion.

  • Participate in recruitment and obtaining informed consent.

  • Administer a battery of assessment instruments according to specific research protocols.

  • Score, transcribe, code, and interpret research data.

  • Become proficient with administering assessments required by the study. These may include clinical outcomes, electrophysiologic data or biomechanics data.

  • Administer treatment procedures according to research protocols.

  • Obtain training on neuromodulation protocols and use of laboratory equipment.

  • Track subject performance during treatment and contribute to therapy progression protocols.

  • Enter data and assist with various record-keeping tasks and data management.

  • Initiate clinical research questions and analyze and interpret data to answer these questions.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining grant applications and documentation for submission to the IRB.

  • Report relevant research findings to IRB and internally to the research team.

  • Assist in analyzing research data and preparation of study publication.

  • If approved by the Principal Investigator, present research findings to The Miami Project’s research community, to audiences within the institution and/or at outside conferences and academic meetings.

  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the NeuroModulation Engineering and Therapeutics (NeuroMET) Laboratory.

  • Perform all duties in-person at the lab hours 2-3 days/week on a schedule determined based on specific study needs by the Director of Neuromotor Rehabilitation and/or study Principal Investigator.

  • Report directly to the Director of Neuromotor Rehabilitation for the time spent on all research projects within the Miami Project.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in relevant field

  • FL Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant

  • Current CPR certification

  • Board Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist is preferred

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience. Preferred Research experience working with spinal cord injury and/or stroke populations

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and physical therapy treatments and modalities at a level normally acquired through completion of Master's degree or DPT from an accredited school of physical therapy.

  • Approximately three to six months on-the-job experience necessary to gain full knowledge of physical therapy techniques and objectives to develop and administer treatment programs to a neurologic patient population.

  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, family members, physicians, and other human service professionals.

  • Analytical ability necessary to prepare reports, maintain data, and identify concerns/responses of participants that require termination of interview or possible intervention.

  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when administering assessments or treatments, observing patients, and maintaining records.

  • Coordinate scheduling with other project staff.

  • Have effective time management, strong project management, the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both written and verbally, and the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
