Physician (Pediatrics)

This position is located in the Clinical Center (CC), Department of Pediatrics (DP). DP is a resource for any clinical researcher who needs assistance with caring for pediatric patients. Researchers may ask for a one-time consultation for an acute pediatric problem or for on-going consultation to help manage long-term conditions.
DutiesAs a GP-0602-14 Physician (Pediatrics) with the Clinical Center your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Providing pediatric consultation and expertise in the course of the clinical care provided for complex pediatric patients enrolled in research protocols in the NIH Clinical Center.
- Providing perioperative care and monitoring for children, attending to pediatric Code Blue events.
- Assisting in the stabilization of children with acute events while alternative care opportunities are arranged.
- Performing and documenting patient's physical assessment and history.
- Analyzing trends in patient conditions.
- Developing a patient management plan in response to the data obtained.
- Communicating and collaborating with the multidisciplinary research team to ensure that patient management strategies are age appropriate and successful in meeting patients' research needs.
- Supporting investigators and clinicians by orchestrating and coordinating complex pediatric clinical care services and collaborating with NIH Institute investigators during the care of complex pediatric patients, including patients with rare diseases enrolled in clinical trials and research protocols.
- Providing expertise for substantial and effective contributions to research through scientific discussions with staff and collaborators.

Education Requirement:
A. Successful completion of the requirements for Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent, from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association; or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR
B. Successful completion of a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States that was demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG);
OR
C. Possession of a Fifth Pathway certificate through the successful completion of premedical education in the United States AND graduate education from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States;

D. Successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Licensure Requirement:
You must have an active, current, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Graduate Training Requirement:
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, you must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below:
An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g. internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME);
OR
A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME);
OR
A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
Additional Qualification Requirements:
In order to qualify for a Physician (Pediatrics) at the GP-0602-14 level, you must possess four years of graduate training in the clinical specialty of the position to be filled, OR four years of equivalent experience and training.
You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
