POSITIONSUMMARY: Responsible for competently handling and processingall laboratory specimens, ensuring specimen integrity by adheringto laboratory procedures to include receipt, data entry, storageand delivery of specimens to testing areas. Serves as a resourcefor specimen and testinginformation.
Requirements
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High schooldiploma or equivalent
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: ASCP or equivalent certification as a phlebotomytechnician preferred.
SKILLS:
- Proficient atobtaining specimens and dispensing critical information inaccordance with section, laboratory, and hospital policies andprocedures
- Must be proficient at receivingspecimens and following written procedures for processingspecimens
- Must be able to read and writeEnglish and be able to communicate effectively
- Must be able to operate laboratory equipment, computersystems, and manage supply inventory system.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum ofthree months in laboratory, including experience with phlebotomy,and processing.
NATURE OFSUPERVISION:
- Responsibleto: Laboratory Director
ENVIRONMENT:
- Bloodbornepathogen -C (Routine ExposureRisk. Routine exposure in daily duties. Exposed to potentiallyinfectious material on a regular basis and is part of the expectedjob task)
Generally works in a well lighted,ventilated area. Exposure to disagreeable odors, toxic fumes, andhigh noise levels and fluctuations in temperatures. Positioninvolves exposure to carcinogenic, hazardous, and flammablechemicals; biohazardous and radioactive materials; sharp needlesand blades; infectious diseases; toxic fumes. Subject to mentalstress from working with infectious materials and reporting resultswhich directly affect patient care. Activities of the job arecarried out indoors, at blood drawing stations, or at a desk,bench, or bedside. Occasionally, employees may be required totransport themselves to perform their duties at HealthFairs.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS: May be required to work more than a standard shiftas dictated by workload, staffing, and equipment failure. Sitting,standing, and stooping may be involved throughout the entire shift.Work occasionally requires safe waist-high lifting and transferringof pediatric and adult patients, usually with assistance. Pushingand pulling up to adult weights may be required. Higher thanshoulder reaching may also be required. Ability to unpack andstock supplies lifting
