The Surgical Services Technologist assists with the total care given by the interdisciplinary team members to the surgical patient under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Patient care is provided in preoperative preparation, intra - and post - operative assessments, and the planning and delivery of care.

In the execution of job duties, it is the universal expectation that all tasks are performed with a patient centered focus, while also seeking opportunities to continually improve core processes.  Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need, which may include but is not limited to: holidays, extended shifts, night and/or weekend shifts, standby and/or on-call.  This job description is only meant to be a representative summary of the major responsibilities and accountabilities performed by the incumbents of this job.  Employees may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Reports to: Clinical Coordinator/Director, Patient Care

Essential Functions

Prepares for surgical cases by anticipating the needs and having supplies, instruments and equipment readily available. Assists with room preparation to facilitate patient turnover.

Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.

Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.

Assists with cleaning of instruments.

Properly labels medications under supervision of RN. Is knowledgeable of both trade and generic medication names.

Job Requirements ?

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Certifications:

Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) (may be obtained week of orientation)

Current credential as a surgical technologist (CST) issued by the National Board of Surgical Technologist and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA).

Current License to practice as a surgical technologist in the state of Virginia.

Minimum Work Experience

Preferred: One year experience as a surgical technician in General, GYN, Urology and Orthopedic procedures.
