Executive Director, Law and Political Economy Collective

The Law and Political Economy Collective (LPE-C) seeks a visionary and dynamic executive director to continue building Law and Political Economy (LPE) as an inclusive, interdisciplinary, and international intellectual community and academic field. A successful candidate will be  enthusiastic, proactive, and entrepreneurial, with substantial academic and administrative experience. Intellectual curiosity and communication skills to work cooperatively with a wide range of scholarly communities both inside and outside the United States are also essential.

The Executive Director will coordinate the activities of LPE-C’s constituent groups and help develop and promote collaborations with established and new partners. The Executive Director will work closely with the LPE-C Executive Board while being responsible for the day-to-day management of the Collective. Examples of the work include:

• Building internal and external communications infrastructure, including website management,  membership newsletters, and social media presence
• Performing day-to-day administrative tasks, including supporting the LPE-C Board, assisting constituent groups with project management, non-profit compliance, finances, and record keeping Initiating and organizing outward-facing LPE-C events 
• Developing new partnerships with advocacy and academic organizations Working with members of the LPE-C Board to develop and implement fundraising strategies
• Strategic planning for organizational growth and development

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic, non-profit, government, or research setting, including strategic planning, program development, and team management
• Post-graduate degree, preferably a Ph.D or J.D. (ABD candidates will be considered) Ability to work independently and proactively
• Experience working collaboratively with diverse communities and stakeholders and fostering partnerships
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with scholars, students, community members, and external stakeholders
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage resources effectively

This is a full-time remote position paying $75,000USD per year plus a $10,000 stipend to cover benefits. A two-year commitment is expected.  Starting summer or early fall 2024.

The LPE Collective brings together three communities of academics, activists, and practitioners, reflecting nearly two decades of institution-building and networking: ClassCrits, Inc.; the Association for the Promotion of Political Economy and Law (APPEAL); and the Global LPE Network, which includes the Law and Political Economy Collaborative Research Network of the Law and Society Association. Each constituent group is committed to the aspirations of the LPE field: With an understanding that economic activity is situated within relations of power and that law forms the infrastructure of markets as well as states, we build the knowledge and capacity necessary to promote and link economic justice and prosperity, ecological resilience, democratic governance, and social justice.

To further this mission, LPE-C conducts a wide range of academic and policy-related activities. We foster scholarship, teaching, and mentoring throughout the LPE ecosystem through a number of activities, including organizing conferences, workshops, and reading groups, and developing new initiatives. We are the home of the Journal of Law and Political Economy, the flagship peer-reviewed, international, interdisciplinary journal of LPE scholarship. LPE-C also works to build networks among scholars in law, economics, the social sciences, and the humanities, and to build connections between academics and policymakers. As an independent membership-based nonprofit organization, LPE-C has co-organized or co-sponsored events with many other organizations, including the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, the University at Buffalo’s Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy, Taproot Earth, the LPE Project, the Institute for New Economic Thinking, Just Money, the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy, the Center for Law and Political Economy (NUDEP) at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas Law School - São Paulo, and the Center for Progressive Reform.
