POSITION SUMMARY

The Interpreter, American Sign Language (ASL), Accessibility is responsible for interpretation and application of the regulations of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and College policies and provisions for accommodation of Dallas College students with disabilities. The ASL Interpreter is responsible for listening, understanding, and translating spoken or written statements from English to ASL. Also responsible for encouraging and supporting an environment throughout the college that is accessible, both architecturally and attitudinally, for students with disabilities. Promotes equal access through coordination of efforts with on and off-campus entities, programs, and agencies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • An understanding of contemporary issues in higher education is required through professional development activities.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information exposed to in the course of business regarding students, supervisors or other employees.

  • Demonstrated success working with diverse communities.

  • Strong ability to work effectively and collaboratively with administration, faculty, students, staff, and other constituent groups and partners, both within and outside Dallas College.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Excellent time management, and organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Understands the subject matter to accurately translate what is being spoken into sign language.

  • Knowledge and understanding of student development theory; knowledge of student due process policies/procedures; knowledge and understanding of the current issues and trends in student affairs and student development.

  • Must possess the ability to converse back and forth in two or more languages.

  • Must be able to preserve the meaning, tone, and emotional value of the original speech and have a firm grasp of both the source and the target languages, including all idioms.

  • Ability to provide quality customer service.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, complex ideas, and information to a variety of stakeholders/constituents within the Dallas College community network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leverage’s technology platforms to support students with disabilities.

  • Provides interpreting services for the hearing impaired in a variety of college activities.

  • Comply by the Interpreting Code of Ethics as established by the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services Board for Evaluation of Interpreters.

  • Have specialize training in the use of gesture, mime, props, drawings and other tools to enhance communication.

  • Perform sign language interpretation for hearing‐impaired students/prospective students, including lectures or other classroom instruction, meeting, registration, testing, tutoring and counseling.

  • Serve as liaison between the students, staff and faculty members.

  • Builds strong professional relationships to assist the deaf or hearing‐impaired individuals understand what is being said in a variety of situations.

  • Research situations involving highly technical information or complex information to gain an understanding of what will be interpreted.

  • Interpreters change the spoken word from one language to another in order to facilitate communication between two parties, who might otherwise be unable to understand each other.

  • May assist in development of schedules for part‐time applicants to fill vacancies in interpreter, tutor, or note‐taker positions.

  • May maintain related department records.

  • Create and maintain a confidential database for student files while maintaining HIPAA compliance.

  • Provide information to prospective students and parents regarding services provided and disability documentation requirements, as well as respond to public inquiries.

  • Develop and implement in-service training for staff and faculty.

  • Present accessibility and disability information at campus events for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Completes required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Normal physical job functions performed within a standard office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with physical challenges to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to work extended hours beyond the regular 8:00 am to 5:00 pm workday especially during heavy registration peak times including nights and weekends.

  • Active and valid basic level certification recognized or issued by the BEI. Official certification required.

  • Experience working with ADA Compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from the full range of diverse populations.

  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills.

  • Position is eligible for flex work with supervisor approval.

  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
