Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a modified hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 2 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.
The Development Research Analyst is a full-time position reporting to an Associate Director of Development Research. The Analyst is responsible for partnering with fundraising divisions to implement and maintain a comprehensive program of strategic information support, including prospect identification and prospect analysis. The Analyst responds to requests for information from liaison divisions, provides analysis on principal and major gift level prospects, evaluates the potential reputational risk in engaging with prospects, manages prospect identification projects, and completes other requests as assigned.
The Analyst must have excellent research, presentation, and organizational skills, be an effective writer, and be persistent and imaginative in devising new ways to secure and analyze information.
The Analyst must be able to work independently as well as on a team. All research conducted by this position must meet the highest standards of confidentiality, quality, accuracy, and timeliness along with utmost attention to detail.
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct research and write reports for liaison divisions and others, including the Office of Principal Gifts and Development and Alumni Relations leadership when assigned, meeting metric benchmarks for work produced. Maintain current knowledge of prospect research and risk assessment techniques, resources, and strategies. Utilize advanced web search strategies and fee-based tools to provide research and risk assessment analysis.
- Conduct prospect identification and assessment projects for liaison divisions, meeting metric benchmarks for work produced. Identify project stakeholders, objectives, goals, and steps. Track projects and report on outcomes. Initiate and/or assist in the design of new projects. Manage philanthropic screening data from vendor sources. Work on select collaborative prospect identification projects as part of a cohesive team.
- Establish strong working relationships with assigned university and medical liaison divisions. Attend and contribute to divisional meetings. Develop an understanding of divisional fundraising priorities and consult with development officers about new and existing individual prospects and prospect pools. Field and manage research requests, ongoing projects, and special projects. Make presentations about the results of projects. Determine work priorities and reprioritize workload when necessary to ensure that all deadlines are met with quality products. Conduct introductory meetings with new team members. Maintain news monitoring pages and portfolio tracking to provide updates on existing and potential prospects.
- Stay up-to-date with prospect research resources and techniques. Participate in training and education opportunities offered by Development and Alumni Relations, Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, vendors, and appropriate professional organizations (APRA, CASE, AFP, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- One-year related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to synthesize a high volume of information and perform complex analysis to assess risk; interpret financial data and individual wealth indicators; identify philanthropic patterns; and discover relationships among individuals, corporations, and foundations. Ability to recognize and work with wealth indicators and assign appropriate gift capacity and risk ratings.
- Possess curiosity, patience, diligence, persistence, and enthusiasm for learning. Attention to detail is critical.
- Must be able to resolve issues, represent findings, and interpret divisional research needs. Able to adapt to the dynamics of divisional changes in personnel, priorities, and needs.
- Initiative and ability to learn quickly, prioritize tasks, problem solve, work independently, and work well under pressure. Ability to re-prioritize individual work projects when office needs require collaborative research on time-sensitive or large-scale requests.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to function in a team environment.
- Possess excellent written communication skills, including strong editing, spelling, and grammar skills.
- High level of proficiency in the use of desktop systems and online databases. Ability to use tools such as Excel and visualization software to analyze datasets and accomplish work objectives.
- Must understand and practice a high standard of confidentiality and ethical information collection, adhering to the ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both Johns Hopkins University and Medicine and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).
