This position is in the Office of Oceanic & Atmospheric Research (OAR) | Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) with 1 vacancy in Boulder, CO. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties: Conduct research on and develop earth system and meteorological forecast models (dynamic core) software codes for massively parallel supercomputers across heterogeneous environments, including on-premise and cloud platforms with code design and optimization for accuracy, performance and portability. Improve and produce products for weather prediction for extreme precipitation events, with focus on data assimilation of novel observations and model ensemble post- processing. Use domain specific languages including familiarity with novel computer architectures (e.g. GPUs) to further exascale needs of next-generation earth system prediction models including high- resolution and ensemble forecast applications. Apply scientific computer programming expertise, machine learning techniques and software (e.g., Fortran, Python, and/or C++) and use innovative approaches to develop, configure, execute, and interpret weather forecast models to provide information to a variety of users. Develop and manage projects within the organization. Serve as expert advisor to senior level management. Coordinate organizational and scientific capabilities with scientific and administrative staff in National Administrative and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Offices, Laboratories and Cooperative Institutes, other Federal Agencies, universities, and other research organizations. Present research results to internal and external audiences/stakeholders. Participate in meetings, conferences, and workshops. Contribute to peer-reviewed scientific papers and assessments.
