Distribution Planning and Asset Management (North Andover, MA) 

Our Distribution Planning and Asset Management team is part of the Electric Asset Management & Engineering team for the entire National Grid footprint. This team continues to find ways to apply cutting-edge technology to ensure they are upgrading and modifying aging infrastructure along with embracing and integrating smart technologies throughout. As this team works daily on several projects, their culture is self-directed and empowered, embracing the accountability inherent in our roles. As a Gridtern, you will support with evaluating co-generation interconnection requests regarding their impact on the distribution system and develop plans for suitable connection. In addition, you will help investigate complex customer voltage complaints and resolve customer issues and operating problems, i.e., fault duty calculations, stray voltage, power quality, motor start, etc. 

 

Electric Distribution Design (North Andover, MA & Brockton, MA) 

Our Electric Distribution Design team is responsible for conducting the fieldwork and designs and supporting various tasks to complete the estimates and construction packages for our Electric Operations construction department.  This team interacts closely with external customers to support their construction and electrical service needs along with connecting with internal customers to assist with their company asset projects.  As a Gridtern, you will be connecting with engineers, supervisors and managers in the department to complete tasks that support the overall designs, prioritization and work management of the projects that pass through our department.  This could include conducting site visits for customer meetings or collecting field information, initiating work in our work management system, attending meetings, and creating and analyzing reports. 

Gas Pipeline Safety and Compliance (Waltham, MA) 

Our Compliance Performance Oversight team falls within the Gas Pipeline Safety and Compliance department. This team serves as the second line insurance to make sure our gas pipeline work stays in compliance with regulatory requirements. In addition, this team also conducts control testing, deliver step changes in our compliance performance through 1st and 2nd lines of assurance while providing oversight on programs to the GBU to remediate noncompliance. Lastly, this team helps to manage the reporting of mandated programs and pipeline safety incidents across the GBU and oversight of Regulatory Management of Change process. As a Gridtern, you will work closely with team members to ensure best practice program, portfolio, and project governance and controls are set in place and maintained. Additionally, with the use of data analysis, you will work with and support project owners, to drive and challenge delivery to ensure that their projects are delivered on time, cost, and quality and that business benefit realization is managed. 

 

Liquid Natural Gas - Operations (Dorchester, MA) 

Our Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) - Operations team works to provide supplemental gas supplies to our system during periods of high demand due to low temperatures or loss of system pressure.  Within this team, the Compliance & Training group covers three states along with ten LNG plants to ensure high levels of regulatory and company policy compliance are upheld at all times. With internal audits/inspections, risk analysis, and standardization across the enterprise, this team ensures all areas are maintained and deemed safe. As a Gridtern, you will create work instruction on the process workflow along with analyzing multiple spreadsheets used to collect data to develop a comprehensive database to use for Power BI Dashboard. 

Liquid Natural Gas - Special Projects (Lowell, MA) 

Our Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) – Special Projects team provides support for all of our New England powerplants. As they are responsible for making up the difference in gas required for the system, they are continuously analyzing ways to distribute natural gas efficiently. In addition, this team converts the liquified gas in our tanks into gas that can flow into the system to make up for this difference in required versus purchased. As a Gridtern, you will be support with various work orders and tracking project progress using the Maximo application. In addition, you will have the opportunity to obtain a deeper understanding of the energy industry by participating in project meetings and the work surrounding a clean energy transition.   

 

NE Gas Instrumentation and Regulation (Braintree, MA) 

Our Instrumentation and Regulation (I&R) team is responsible for the instrumentation, pressure regulation and gas conditioning for our company’s gas system within Massachusetts. This team continues to support various work streams including tracking and performing maintenance along handling new installations. As a high percentage of this work is mandated by the federal code, they help to ensure that these areas are up to standard. As a Gridtern, you will work with supervisors and technicians on both new and telemetry installations and support the tracking of mandated work within our system.   

 

New England Process Safety Engineering (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England Process Safety Engineering team is responsible for upholding and helping our organization implement the Process Safety Management System (PSMS), Risk Control Standards (RCSs) and a wide variety of risk assessment and assurance efforts within our Process Safety space for our Major Hazard Asset (MHA) businesses. When implementing PSMS, this team can identify key hazardous sites/operations and define procedures for the management of the people, processes, and procedures. As a Gridtern, you will assist the Process Safety Engineers and directors with initiatives including incident tracking, risk portfolio and process safety training efforts/organization. In addition, you will have the opportunity to process safety procedure reviews, assurance activity support, take part in process safety trainings for learning, shadow observations of risk assessment activity and participate in potential site visits. 

New England South - Transmission Planning (Waltham, MA) 

Our New England South - Transmission Planning team is responsible for the work on establishing transmission development and expansion plans. This team continues to find ways to provide a more optimized, safe and effective management of our transmission assets. As a Gridtern, you will assist with the development of thermal ratings of transmission circuits, which include/ but not limited to power transmission lines, transformers, circuit breakers, and other current carrying devices. 

 

Options Solutions Engineering (Waltham, MA) 

Our Options Solutions Engineering team works to create initial scopes for all transmission and substation projects. They help to evaluate the feasibility of capital, customer, or large interconnection projects, engaging with project sponsors to make decisions on the most appropriate option to fulfill customer needs. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse and dynamic team and learn the electric business including the planning, asset management and engineering aspects of our business.  You will also get the chance to work with Subject Matter Experts (SME) in the group by assisting the engineers on their day-to-day tasks including participating in field visits to our substations. 

 

Project Management & Construction (Waltham, MA) 

Our Project Management & Construction team is responsible for the safe execution and delivery of complex electric capital projects across New England. This team manages both our internal and external construction crews working on our Transmission, Substation, and Distribution systems throughout. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside various managers and supervisors on numerous construction projects and obtain a deeper understanding of the work taken place behind the scenes.

Property Services (Waltham, MA) 

Our Property Services team helps to support the facilities along with various capital projects throughout our 50+ National Grid sites in the New England area. As they help to assist with troubleshooting, procedural clarifications, scope development and cost estimates along with financial matters regarding safety plan reviews and drafting Sanction paper. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to our capital process throughout each of our sites. While being able to learn and track the performance of EV charging stations, monitor utility consumption at National Grid facilities and learn more about our capital project delivery processes and practices.   

What You'll Need
  • Availability to start on program start date, May 27, 2025, and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer 
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2025 Semester  
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree 
  • Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, AI/ Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Power Systems, Information Technology or a related field 
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age  
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT) 
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00 - $26.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)
$28.00 - $33.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

 

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
