Portland, United States Textile Hive Remote Work Freelance Full time
Textile Hive is seeking a copywriter and editor to lead the development of written materials for our upcoming textile exhibitions. They will be responsible for developing the workflow, creating a consistent voice, and editing written content for the upcoming physical exhibitions, exhibition catalogs, the website, and marketing materials. The first two exhibitions, Dakota Transit (1968-1973 custom snakeskin and leather fashion) and Peruvian textiles, will open in October 2024. The second two, Chinese and Japanese textiles, will open in 2025.

Scope of Work
Develop the workflows that sync changes between design and curatorial teams, manage the text repositories, and serve as the central stakeholder and project manager for all written content produced in conjunction with upcoming exhibits.

Edit writing from multiple contributors and sources, applying organizational voice as needed. You should have the ability to discern when that is necessary and when it is preferable to maintain the original writer’s voice.

Descriptive text for exhibit objects for digital and in-person exhibits, exhibit catalogs, and exhibit guides and materials.

Text for marketing materials, such as posters and postcards.

Develop naming conventions of exhibit projects such as exhibit names and catalog titles

Standardize format for object details referencing the Chicago Manual of Style or similar and applying it to different assets: print materials including catalogs, press releases, online exhibit materials, etc.

Generate original content as needed.

Develop and employ guidelines regarding voice, style and content, word count, editorial tips, and formats for didactics

Prepare the manuscripts for design and typesetting, i.e. fix capitalization, hyphens and dashes, tag parts of the text that are to be italics, bold, in a language other than English, etc.

Qualifications
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy.

Strong project management skills with a proactive and flexible work style.

Strong interpersonal skills and experience with working with multiple collaborators.

Familiarity and working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style or alternative equivalent and ability to quickly learn Textile Hive’s preferred writing/editing style.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe InDesign. Adept at using track changes and suggesting tools in order to contribute to and manage complex and detailed review and commenting cycles involving multiple authors and stakeholders. Experience with Adobe InCopy a plus.

Minimum of two years’ experience in work environments with writing, editing, or related media responsibilities.

Our expectation is that the Copywriter will produce original writing and not use AI to generate text. You should have an understanding of when it is appropriate to use AI tools to brainstorm and support your process.
