JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in the Resource Stewardship division of Rocky Mountain National Park. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately April to February, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. For questions about this position, please reach out to Kelly Dick at kelly_dick@nps.gov. MAJOR DUTIES: Participates in archeological field surveys located with Rocky Mountain National Park. Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., maintains field notes, narrative sections, sketch maps, location maps, artifact sketches, artifact field catalogs, photo documentation, photographic logs, and GPS data logs). Provides leadership to field crews by assigning tasks and monitoring the status of those assignments. Serves as Crew Chief. Assists in the development of a variety of documents by gathering data from files and reports, conducting research, and evaluating available information. Data management responsibilities will include completing field data sheets, using computer programs such as Word, Excel, and Access, entering data into NPS Cultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS), formerly the Archeological Site Management Information System (ASMIS) Database, operating global positioning system (GPS) equipment, entering data into park geographic information systems (GIS) and creating project maps for daily field use and for annual reports. In addition, will be required to create and deliver presentations including use of PowerPoint for internal and external audiences. This position is a permanent career seasonal position that includes the same benefits as a year-round position but does not provide work on a year-round basis. This position is guaranteed to work at least 6 months, but not more than 50 weeks per year. The typical recurring paid employment is anticipated to be from April to February with 2 to 4 weeks of non-pay in March. Physical Demands: the work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g. packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed both in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbent must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads. Sustained periods of camping under primitive conditions are routine. Area Information: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11 miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Due to the park's easy accessibility to the Front Range communities of Colorado, Rocky experiences over 4 million visitors annually. This position will be filled on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The nearest community is Estes Park, CO, which has K-12 schools, a post office, restaurants, medical facilities, and grocery stores. Denver, CO which has a major airport, cultural events, and several professional sports teams is a two-hour drive away. Government housing may be available on a temporary or permanent basis. Housing assignments are made through a bid process. IMPORTANT: Click the 'Apply for this job' button to view a complete job description.
