Description

To perform semi-skilled and skilled computer operations work to set up, monitor and control various microcomputer operating systems; to review and install current software and peripheral equipment; and to trouble shoot hardware and software problems.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

1. Perform semi-skilled and skilled computer operations work; set up, monitor, and control various microcomputer operating systems.

2. Install software packages; perform maintenance on all computers and peripheral equipment; trouble shoot microcomputer problems.

3. Maintain and update hardware and software inventory and peripheral equipment; maintain upgrades, registration, warranties, and documentation.

4. Organize user hard disk storage; eliminate unnecessary, outdated, or illegal software; organize directories, subdirectories and files according to existing standards; execute back up measures.

5. Purchase equipment; obtain cost estimates and recommend purchases as appropriate.

6. Recommend and administer microcomputer standards including hard disk organization, directory naming, user menu systems and software support.

7. Maintain and update telecommunications systems.

8. Perform field installations of PC’s and maintenance as required.

Marginal Functions:

1. Promote microcomputer literacy among City employees; provide individual and group training as needed.

2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge: Knowledge of computer operations, software, information storage and retrieval techniques and methods; Knowledge of computer and office equipment and software as well as source vendors; Knowledge of generally acceptable accounting principles, basic recordkeeping and bookkeeping practices and methods; Extensive knowledge of PC troubleshooting, PC setup, and general computer networking and security.

Skills: Exceptional customer service. Advanced skill in PC troubleshooting, Windows support, and troubleshooting. PC applications including Office 365 and standard ERP processes. Skill in organizing and prioritizing work; Skill in data gathering, compilation, formatting, and presentation; Skill in communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and vendors, sufficient to exchange or convey technical information and to negotiate basic agreements.

Abilities: Install and maintain major software packages for microcomputers; Trouble shoot various microcomputer problems and recommend solutions; Set up and take down microcomputers, printers and associated peripheral equipment; Analyze information, form hypotheses and formulate user friendly solutions to microcomputer problems; Interpret and explain highly technical microcomputer information; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Supplemental Information

 

Experience:

Two years of computer application and systems analysis experience.

Education or Training:

Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science or a related field.

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
