Ann Arbor, United States University of Michigan Health System Full time
How to Apply

A cover letter and resume are required for consideration for this position; include the cover letter as the first page of your resume. It should specifically address your interest in this position and outline experience directly related to this position.

Summary

You will work on multiple components of a study of firearm injury prevention, under the guidance of Dr. Alison Miller, a faculty member in Health Behavior and Health Education (HBHE) at the School of Public Health. HBHE is internationally known for research and intervention work concerning social factors affecting health-related behavior, and for developing and evaluating interventions designed to improve individual and community health. You will work in concert with Dr. Alison Miller and research team members, including students, on a CDC funded study of firearm injury prevention in young children.

The first component involves recruiting, interviewing, and engaging with parents of young children (age 0-5 years) in the community. This will include recruiting parents to participate in individual interviews and group sessions involving concept mapping and design thinking. It also requires conducting specialized interviews. We also ask that you have expertise in interviewing skills and familiarity and experience interacting with children and families, ideally in the local area (Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor) or regionally in Michigan.

The second component involves engaging with community partners who will be the community advisory board for the study. You will assist and co-facilitate meetings of the community advisory board and will be encouraged to seek out and engage new members to join the board. Local knowledge of the context will also be helpful.

The third component involves developing communication materials for a parent-facing intervention and workshopping these materials with parents. Materials may include graphics, videos, and intervention manuals. You will organize and pilot-testing materials and delivery modalities with parents and support planned intervention activities.

The fourth component involves contributing to research activities including data analysis (mostly qualitative and mixed methods) and supporting Dr. Miller's lab manager regarding data management needs, research reporting, and participant activities (e.g., preparing IRB submission materials, clinical trials materials, HSIP payment tracking). You may also review literature for best practices, grant writing, development of manuscripts and presentations working with Dr. Miller. You will also provide supervision of student interns and temporary staff for all of the above activities.

About the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education:

You will be based in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education (HBHE) at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. Driven by a shared passion for affecting lasting change, the faculty, students, and staff of HBHE work in the pursuit of an equitable, healthy future for all. Turning theory and research into actionable practice, we develop interventions and innovations that promote health, prevent disease, empower people to manage chronic illness and disabilities, and facilitate collective action for social change.
