Student Trainee

Summary

The position will be filled at the GS-07 grade level. There is no opportunity for non-competitive conversion to a Federal career or career-conditional position at the conclusion of the internship.

Law interns do NOT have the opportunity to be noncompetitively converted to positions in the competitive service since attorneys are in the excepted service pursuant to section 213.3102 of 5 CFR.

Duties

• As a Student Trainee, you will actively participate in on-the-job training and progressively challenging assignments that relate to your academic program, career goals, and the needs of the agency.
• As the Student Trainee (Legal) for the Office of General Counsel or Office of Counsel, you will:
• Perform legal research using commercially available legal research software and publicly available research tools to investigate questions of law raised in response to matters brought to the Office of General Counsel or Office of Counsel for action.
• Perform fact-finding research on assignments assigned by staff attorneys on a variety of legal subjects.
• Search legal documents, historical files, and other legal resources on questions relating to myriad of legal subjects.
• Prepare legal memoranda and other written documents in accordance with general law school standards.
• Verbally brief attorneys and clients regarding results of research and analysis as requested by staff attorneys.
• Assist in drafting and commenting on litigation materials, and legal opinions.
• Assist attorneys with transactional reviews and litigation tasks.
• Assist with preparation of data, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint slides.
• Assist with the analysis of data.
