Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Exploration Manager, the Exploration Geologist will contribute to the planning and execution of exploration programs at the Round Mountain mine. The Exploration Geologist will ensure that high quality geologic data is collected, implement best practices and new advances in exploration science, develop and refine exploration concepts, and identify new targets, by applying a strong understanding of economic geology and mineral exploration techniques. Operates with a high degree of autonomy on some projects to develop innovative solutions and new concepts. The role is based at the Round Mountain mine site, with several schedule options available depending on experience and demonstrated ability to complete work.

Job Responsibilities

Applies economic geology concepts including: hydrothermal ore deposit types, metallogeny of western United States to guide exploration decisions and develop targets.

Field supervision of drilling/sampling programs and representing the company to contractors.

Managing core logging and sampling program and training core loggers and geotechnicians, as well as occasional logging of core and RC cuttings.

QA/QC tracking and data validation.

Data entry and data management, designing and improving existing workflows to manage geochemical, geophysical, and geologic data.

Field geological mapping, creating cross sections, and integrating a variety of geological data sets to create new maps and models.

Geologic/structural modelling and interpretation in 2D and 3D space, delivering useful products to other groups.

Writing regular update reports and detailed technical reports for a variety of audiences, with potentially short notice.

Consistently exercises good judgment managing time and resources effectively in an evolving and dynamic environment.

Operates with a high degree of autonomy on some projects to develop innovative solutions and new concepts. Ensures that new advances in mineral exploration and economic geology are implemented into the exploration program.

Manages junior geologists and technicians and works to mentor and develop employees.

Helps track project costs and invoices, assists with budgeting and long-term planning.

Responsible for managing the RMGC Environmental Health and Safety Management system in his/her areas of responsibility and demonstrating these values to others.

Perform other related functions as assigned by the Exploration Manager.

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in Geology or Geosciences. Masters degree in structural or economic geology preferred.

3-5 years related work experience as a geologist (for B.S. candidates), 2 years (for M.S. candidates), preferably in an exploration role.

Skills

Strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to work effectively and respectfully with a variety of technical and non-technical collaborators with different backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to stay organized and effectively manage data in a dynamic work environment.

Strong technical writing skills, able to create presentations and communicate results effectively.

Solid grasp of word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software (MS Office Suite), experience with database software (acQuire) preferred

Good understanding of the mineral exploration process, core/RC drilling, and best practices for conducting exploration programs

Strong background in fundamental geology skills, including: geologic mapping, rock and mineral identification, creating cross sections, historical geology.

Strong understanding of economic geology principles, including: hydrothermal ore deposit types, geochemistry, and geophysics. Experience working on low-sulfidation epithermal deposits and or/ in volcanic environments preferred.

Able to research geologic concepts and apply new advances in economic geology/exploration techniques. Keeps current with new research and publications related to the exploration program.

Ability to work effectively manage time between different projects and use good judgement to balance deadlines. Proactively seeks feedback as needed at important decision points.

Experience using 3D modeling software (Leapfrog, Vulcan, Micromine, or similar) to display data, plan drillholes, and perform basic geologic modeling.

Experience using (or formal training in the use of) 2D GIS software to effectively manage field data collection, create maps, and plan exploration.

Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis.

Requires valid driver's license.
