Nursery Manager

We’re hiring a Nursery Manager to lead our location in Monroe, NC. In this role, you would be the site manager leading all operations of our outdoor bare root seedling production. This location produces 25,000 shrubs and ornamental trees with about 30 production acres per year, split between in-ground and container. You would be leading a small team of 4-6 full-time employees, while also planning, managing, and overseeing nursery functions including crop production, logistics, customer service, administration, and maintenance.

Our ideal candidate brings:
- Prior agriculture, arboriculture, ornamental horticulture, and/or greenhouse operations management.
- 5+ years of experience growing annuals, perennials, or nursery plants like trees or shrubs, in containers, the field, and/or controlled environments.
- Proven ability to detect plant diseases and the existence of insects.
- Previous experience leading a team as a supervisor, crew lead, or superintendent.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- Present customers, crew members, and key suppliers with prompt, detailed, and accurate information.
- Direct plant transportation, logistics, and delivery direct to customers or job sites.
- Prepare, manage, and forecast expense budgets for the nursery.
- Procurement of materials essential for plant production such as seeds, cuttings, containers, ect.
- Director of scheduling, propagating, planting, transplanting, watering, plant nutrition, and pest management.
- Creator of IPM (integrated pest management), crop input, fertilizer, irrigation schedules, and production plans.
- Assess plant health daily, monitor, and adjust processes to promote plant health and development as needed.
- Manage plant inventory to ensure accurate quantities are available for current and future customer orders.
- Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of current business practices and offer suggestions for process improvement.
- Promote the growth and expansion of nursery yard production.
- Ensure a safe workplace by following and promoting safe work practices and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills:
- BS degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Forestry or related science OR equivalent experience, with an understanding of and experience in landscaping and hardscaping.
- Current Pesticide License or the ability to obtain licensing upon employment is required.
- English-Spanish Bilingual speaker preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift upwards of 50 pounds.
- The ability to walk, stand, and bend at the waist and knees while working .
- Willing and able to work outside in all seasons and weather conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends during busy seasons.
- Exposure to dust, pollen, and agricultural/greenhouse nutrient inputs is common.
