The Position:

Position General Summary:

The Building Construction Technology Instructor, Florida Scholars Academy (FSA) provides an educational atmosphere where students can reach their full educational potential. The Building Construction Technology Instructor, Florida Scholars Academy exhibits a passion for, and dedication to, the remediation, acceleration, and academic growth of at-risk students. This position organizes and implements an instructional program resulting in students achieving academic success in accordance with state policies and laws. This position is responsible for teaching assigned academic subjects in residential facilities for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice students.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Plan, prepare, and implement engaging instruction in the content area that align with FLDOE state standards within CTE frameworks and contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful, hands on and experiential learning experiences.

  • Models and exercises safe practices and prepares students to take all responsible precautions to provide for the health and safety of students and to operate equipment and handle materials in a safe manner in accordance with educational and industry standards.

  • Identify, select, create, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.

  • Participate in the recruitment of students for the CTE programs.

  • Identify the communication, collaboration, and technology skills used to create engagement and prepare workforce readiness skills and employability skills.

  • Be responsible for the supervision of students assigned to the class.

  • Conduct roll calls, counts, and maintains attendance records.

  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

  • Ensure that order and discipline are maintained in the classroom using effective classroom behavior management techniques.

  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.

  • Evaluate students and make determinations as to overall progress.

  • Grade student assignments and assessments and follows all grading procedures. Counsel and advise students regarding their academic and behavioral progress.

  • Collaborate with supervisor and peers to enhance the instructional environment for students by participating in activities which include, but are not limited to, team teaching, meetings, professional learning, and professional learning communities.

  • Attend the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education (FACTE) conference and workforce related trainings/workshops to stay current with industry trends.

  • Engage in continuous professional development that includes earning and maintaining the appropriate industry certifications applicable to standards and content area taught.

  • Engage with the local business and industry community to support program outcomes and provide potential job placement opportunities for student success.

  • Communicate with students, parents/guardians, and internal and external stakeholders within established timelines.

  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

  • Ensure that student's growth and achievement are continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and other stakeholders measured by district/school survey results.

  • Meet specific course and school-wide student performance goals.

  • Demonstrate gains in student performance.

  • Participate in blended learning models, which includes both on-line and classroom instruction and interaction with students at various residential facilities across the state; required to report to an assigned facility.

  • Provide instructional tutoring as directed.

  • Provide services in person at the assigned facility to meet the needs of students under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).

  • Support any other academic related topic established at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools, Florida Scholars Academy, Regional Director, Florida Scholars Academy, or Instructional Leader, Florida Scholars Academy.

  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others.

Minimum Requirements:

Degreed Vocational Education Teacher:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher in subject area

  • At least 2 years of full-time occupational experience in the area of the teaching assignment

OR

Non-Degreed Vocational Teacher:

To be eligible for local certification in a Non-Degreed Vocational subject, you must meet the following requirements:

Hold a high school diploma or GED, and document three years of full-time (or the equivalent part-time) occupational experience in the teaching assignment, and be employed in the FLVS Career and Technical Education program;

1. Completion of a training program specific to the area, completed at a postsecondary vocational or technical institution approved by the State Board for Vocational Education in the state where the institution is located; or

2. A valid certificate, or license issued by a recognized state or national credentialing agency in an area specific to the assignment (RN, Cosmetology, Fire Service Instructor, etc.); or

3. A certificate of completion of an apprenticeship program, established by the U.S. Department of Labor or the Florida Department of Labor (Air Conditioning, Building Maintenance, Electrical Wiring, etc.); and be employed in the FLVS Career and Technical Education program.
