The town of Webster is seeking a full-time (35 hours a week) Principal Clerk in the Town Accountant’s Office who will work under the direct supervision of the Finance Director. The Principal Clerk is responsible for various types of skilled administrative and record-keeping services in support of the Accounting Department. Qualified candidates should have a working knowledge and experience with databases, payroll programs, Microsoft Office and office equipment used by the department. In addition, they should possess the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and pay careful attention to details, despite interruptions. Strong mathematical and accounting skills are essential.  Some essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Processes biweekly expenditure warrants for municipal departments and the school district.
  • Process, reviews, and/or audits invoices by all departments for accuracy, availability of funds, proper coding, departmental authorizations, compliance with purchasing rules and regulations, completeness of documentation, etc.
  • Assists with and performs payroll-related functions including, but not limited to, payroll entry, review of departmental payroll vouchers, and completing back-end payroll processing, reporting, and reconciliation.
  • Responsible for processing town and school payroll in the absence of the Assistant Town Accountant/Payroll Coordinator.
  • Provides assistance to municipal departments, as requested.

    Qualifications/abilities: high school diploma and two to three years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification (finance related preferred), and/or experience. A full job description can be found on the town’s website: www.webster-ma.gov.
