Contacts inpatients and outpatients to collect blood specimens by means of venipuncture, capillary puncture, or other specialized procedures. Performs outpatient EKGs at the Outpatient Center and as necessary within the hospital. Verifies that patients meet collection and test preparation criteria. Instructs patients as required in the collection and handling of urine and other specimens. Sorts and transports specimens, requests and results to appropriate destinations. Obtain and process laboratory specimens for testing. Provide clerical and receptionist service to the lab.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED) 2. Completion of Phlebotomy Certification Course, Medical Assistant Program, or graduate of a nursing program. EXPERIENCE: 1. Ability to obtain quality specimens from patients of all ages via venipuncture, capillary puncture, and heel sticks. 2. Ability to maintain/update the computer competencies as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Six (6) months phlebotomy experience. 2. Experience using a Laboratory Information System.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.   1. Performs various laboratory collection and processing procedures such as administration of timed tolerance tests, collecting and processing of blood, urine, and other specimens as indicated by procedures.
  2. Perform EKGs for outpatient services.
  3. Monitors patients and notifies supervisors in the event of an adverse reaction to venipuncture.
  4. When assigned to collecting labs, makes STAT and routine rounds to all parts of the hospital to perform venipuncture or capillary puncture according to the age of the populations served.
  5. Performs special specimen collections requiring aseptic technique and critical timing.
  6. Organizes STAT, scheduled and random specimen collections and documents deliveries
  7. Ascertains that all incoming specimens meet established criteria for quality testing.
  8. Performs various computer functions such as assignment of patient encounters (Mini Reg.), ensures proper patient identification, order entry, documentation of specimen collection, proper specimen labeling, specimen receipt, and prints collection list using the Cerner Lab System.
  9. Prints, sorts, and distributes patient test reports according to laboratory schedule. Performs additional computer tasks required for outreach specimen processing, reference lab test order processing, and statistical data entry using a variety of other computer programs. Submits information for the update of physician database and statistical files.
  10. Answers and responds to telephone inquiries, directing physician/patient questions to personnel as appropriate. Calls critical laboratory results to physicians and documents call information in Cerner. Faxes results to ordering provider as indicated.
  11. Greets hospital and ODC outpatients and assists them with questions and concerns. Directs patients' requests to appropriate personnel. Assists patients with requests for reports according to HIPPA guidelines.
  12. Prepares samples to be sent to reference laboratories. This includes, but is not limited to, proper collection container, specimen type, specimen temperature, specimen stability, etc. Ensures that pending logs are maintained to account for all patient samples. Properly packs and ships speci ens to all referral laboratories.
  13. Receives specimens from pneumatic tube system. Documents specimen collection and receipt using the Cerner lab system. Centrifuges, aliquots, and delivers prepared specimens to indicated departments.
  14. Keeps abreast of the latest technical developments affecting the scope of responsibility, including regular attendance at all in-service programs.
  15. Maintains and updates departmental files including preparation of reports and special requisitions.
  16. Maintains department equipment including recording requirements and reporting malfunctions
  17. Sorts and distributes mail.
