GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES include, but are not limited to:
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).
The Hematology-Oncology APRN functions as a provider, overseeing care provided to patients in the hematology-oncology Clinics. This includes identifying the patient's medical problems through proper assessment, defining the medical management of these problems, determining need for consultation from medical, surgical, or psychiatric subspecialty clinics, and evaluating outcomes. This includes the ordering and interpretation, assisting and overseeing diagnostic studies, assistance with infusion orders, chemotherapeutics, and other medical management. The APRN will also assist the medical oncologist with telehealth visits including telepresentation and assisting with orders. The APRN may also see inpatient consultation for hematology oncology services and discuss with the oncologist to direct management and care. The APRN provides leadership in implementation and application of all programs as required, improving patient care, maintaining standards of care, and directing/teaching personnel in a variety of settings. The incumbent may have other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service.
The Hershel "Woody" Williams VAMC (HWWVAMC) is a Level 1b interdisciplinary teaching facility with service-lines serving medical and surgical, inpatients and outpatients, with an Emergency Department and multiple community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC). There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. Home-Based Primary Care is provided in the veteran's home.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The incumbent is under the supervision of the Oncology Section Chief, who provides the administrative and clinical supervision and general instruction, plans and assigns work, assigns time schedules, approves leave, and completes performance evaluations in conjunction with the assistant chief of medicine. Incumbent is responsible for being self-directed in the delivery of patient care under minimal supervision and instruction.
