The Lead Dental Officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:
FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF DUTIES
Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity
Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions.
Administer local anesthesia.
Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth.
Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth.
Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures.
Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work.
Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth.
Perform routine and surgical procedures within the scope of a general dentist.
The scope of practice that a specific provider may perform is defined through the medical center credentialing and privileging process.
ADMINISTRATIVE SCOPE OF DUTIES:
Is knowledgeable of and maintains Service compliance with a) VHA Handbooks and Directives, b) VISN Policies, c) Medical Center Memorandum and d) Service Policies and Procedures pertinent to dental clinic management.
Is knowledgeable and capable for responding to Congressional inquiries regarding issues germane to the Dental Service.
Is knowledgeable and in compliance with accreditation standards, including IG, Joint Commission, and other applicable survey/oversight entities.
Is knowledgeable and in compliance with Safety and Environment of Care (EOC) standards and programs including the following:
MSDS Requirements
The Joint Commission EOC Standards
Disposal of Hazardous Wastes
GEMS Program
Facility Emergency Preparedness Plan
Infection Control Guidelines for Dentistry including management of RME
Is in compliance with VHA Scheduling Directives to enhance the management of access.
Has knowledge of and is in compliance with conflict of interest and ethics policies related to business practices/associations including contracting and procurement regulations.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
