Position Description

Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Faculty– Department of Physical Therapy

1. Brief statement of duties and responsibilities:  

The Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh, which is ranked number 1 in the US News and World Report, is currently recruiting a faculty member with a strong clinical background in orthopedic physical therapy to serve as a core faculty member for the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program with responsibilities for teaching, conducting research, and providing service in the Department of Physical Therapy.  The faculty member will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The full-time 12-month position will be in the tenure stream at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. 

The Department is housed in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), one of the six Schools of Health Sciences. We offer an entry-level DPT degree, and post-professional programs leading to a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences, and dual DPT-PhD in Bioengineering degrees as well as post-graduate certificates. The DPT degree is delivered in two formats: residential and hybrid, and this position will primarily serve the residential format. 

Responsibilities for the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Faculty position include:

·       Collaborating with the Vice Chair for DPT Education, Program Director of the Residential option of the DPT program, and Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy course instructors to ensure integration of concepts across the spectrum of orthopedic conditions throughout the musculoskeletal curriculum;

·       Collaborating with the faculty instructors in the Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy curriculum to ensure consistency and quality of curricular content between residential and hybrid courses.

·       Participating in instruction of residential Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy course sequence;

·       Participating in DPT student advisement, and in designing, implementing, and evaluating the curriculum;

·       Development and leadership of an externally funded, independent research program focused on evaluation, assessment, treatment, and/or knowledge translation related to orthopedic conditions managed by physical therapists;

·       Service on committees relevant to the research and teaching mission of the Department, School, and University.

2. Minimum objective qualifications; other desirable qualifications:

Requirements for the position

      ·         Earned professional PT degree from a CAPTE-accredited program;

      ·         Licensed as a physical therapist or eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania;

      ·         PhD or other advanced doctoral degree;

Desirable candidates for the position may have some of the following qualifications:

      ·         Experience in teaching orthopaedic physical therapy;

      ·         Experience as a clinician in a setting relevant to orthopaedic physical therapy;

      ·         Demonstrated evidence of ability to develop an independent research program that includes successful acquisition of external funding from national agencies.   

3. Rank and/or title; salary range or minimum:

Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor is anticipated. The academic rank and salary are competitive and will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.  

4. Tenure/tenure-stream/non-tenure stream; full/part-time:

This is a tenure-stream, full-time position.

5. Proposed starting date:

March 1, 2024.
