SUMMARY

This is a senior level professional legal support position. The Paralegal III is assigned as a Team Leader and provides direction to the junior paralegals. The incumbent often works on all phases of a matter, such as on a trial from beginning to end. For litigation matters, the incumbent supports attorneys in courtroom or may be required to attend trials acting as an assistant to the attorney during the court proceedings. The incumbent generally is assigned multiple tasks and matters of the most complex nature with little supervision. The employee may receive work guidance from attorneys, managers, supervisors, and the Paralegal Supervisor. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures, this position relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. The position has independent judgment and action in accordance with established guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Leads and directs the work of junior paralegals, provides guidance on conducting legal research, drafting documents, and performing administrative tasks. Provides guidance in developing effective working relationships, locating documents and information, interviewing witnesses, effectuating filing of legal documents (paper and e-filing), and other legal support tasks. Drafts a variety of legal documents, including pleadings, answers, motions, discovery responses and requests, briefs, and routine correspondence such as internal memoranda, research summaries, and reports. Prepares briefs and motions in final format, including automating Tables of Contents (TOC) and Tables of Authorities (TAC). Performs investigations of accident/injury claims of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) employees, clients and third-parties, including locating, interviewing, preparing witnesses and records custodians and photographing accident scenes. Collaborates effectively and professionally to gather evidence and records from other WMATA departments and outside entities, including medical providers, employers, and police and fire departments. Reviews records and recommends redactions using established General Counsel (COUN) and WMATA's guidelines and standards (i.e., personal identifying information (PII), attorney-client privileged, deliberative process, proprietary, confidential business decisions, etc.). Analyzes and prepares summaries of records reviewed by noting, investigating, and referring any errors or missions to attorneys or senior paralegals, including medical, employment, and other relevant documents. Researches and analyzes law sources, such as statuses, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes to prepare legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, and contracts, under the direction of an attorney or a paralegal supervisor. Performs all functions necessary to successfully complete e-filing of legal documents in the courts of the local jurisdictions. Prepares queries of data contained in the department's case management system. Analyzes data and prepares management reports. Performs legal research using the department's online research tools and the print library. Interprets and prepares summaries of applicable case law. Maintains litigation files, by reviewing and preparing material for storage or disposal once a case or matter has closed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Records and maintains attorney calendars, including court appearance schedule, depositions, witness interviews, meetings, site visits and filing requirements. Prepares litigation and non-litigation legal materials, including organization of trial exhibits, preparation of trial notebooks, organization of facts, records, and other documents. Obtains, organizes, and may serve as point of contact for due diligence, litigation or projects. Maintains online and paper pleading and other legal files. Generates new records, using the department's case management system, to ensure all appropriate documentation has been received. Creates physical and online folders and distributes new case files to appropriate party. Dockets communication and other related elements in the WMATA legal database for tracking related to deadlines and due dates, including preparation of routine documents such as closing memos and other legal files. Performs routine office duties such as helping prepare court or other filings, photocopying and scanning documents, and opening and screening incoming mail, creating PowerPoint presentations and spreadsheets.
