JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office (WFO) with one vacancy in Fairbanks, Alaska. MAJOR DUTIES: The incumbent will serve as a Meteorologist. As a Meteorologist you will perform the following duties: The incumbent with instruction, assistance, and education forecasts weather, water, and climate hazards with associated societal risks to produce and communicate life-saving impact based warnings, advisories, outlooks and general forecasts. The incumbent provides initial review of data to ensure accuracy, precision, and timeliness and consistently participates in on-the-job training. Gain experience, with the assistance of senior team members, incorporating sound decision making, and leveraging intra and inter-office collaboration in preparation of all forecasts and/or outlooks to produces consistent services which are continuously reassessed and adjusted/updated as needed. Collect and integrate a complete set of meteorological, hydrological, and climatic data to provide forecasts of critical elements at global, synoptic, and increasingly finer meso-scale levels. Develop knowledge and expertise in the theory of weather, water and climate sciences, provides current knowledge of scientific and technological developments, and delivers science-based and technology based solutions to operational challenges. Practice under the assistance of senior staff, Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) that include tailored products, specialized notifications, remote briefings, and/or on-site deployments to a set of core partners that share a role in public safety and protection of property.
