About the Role:

We help customers automate their payments. As a Senior Controller, you will oversee the tracking, reconciliation, and recording of these payments in the financial statements. You will collaborate closely with the internal Payment Operations group to ensure transparency, consistency in audit logs, and efficiency in all transactions. As a Senior Controller, you will play a leadership role in the finance team, bringing expertise in accounting, reporting, analysis, processes, and audits. You will also foster strong internal and external relationships and play an active role in team development.

You will be responsible for metrics such as time to close, reconciliation accuracy, and net trust asset optimization.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Analysis:
  • Oversee the accurate and timely preparation and dissemination of financial management reports, including internal and external monthly financial statements, presentations, and annual audits.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to create and analyze financial reports, including those related to payment transaction journal entries, performance metrics, and operational efficiency.
  • Work closely with non-financial stakeholders and other departments, providing expert guidance on accounting, financial reporting, cash flow, and tax matters.
  • Manage and track gross margin by product to identify cost-saving opportunities and support strategic decision-making around pricing initiatives.
  • Manage cash flows and create financial projections to assist in the development of payment-related budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with financial goals and objectives.

Process Improvement and Optimization:
  • Recommend and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to optimize and improve current accounting processes.
  • Develop enhanced SOPs related to payment reconciliation to improve reporting efficiency and accuracy, adhering to accounting standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive payment-related projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment and integration across departments regarding the flow of funds, new or improved payment rails, and reconciliation.

Monitoring and Reconciliation:
  • Oversee daily payment processing operations, including payment returns, reversals, chargebacks, and losses, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded in the accounting ERP system.
  • Generate reports to track payments and reconcile the Net Trust Asset balance to ensure customer funds held in trust equal funds due to customers; investigate and address discrepancies and anomalies.
  • Manage and track processing fees related to payment operations and ensure accurate reporting in the Cost of Sales.

Audit and Documentation:
  • Oversee annual financial statement audits and tax filings.
  • Manage parts of the audits related to payment transactions and financial controls.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed records of payment processes, controls, and compliance activities.
  • Review, update, and/or develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with internal controls, system integrity, and external regulations.

Relationship Management:
  • Represent Finance in managing relationships with payment processors, banks, and other financial service providers.
  • Collaborate with the Payment Operations group on negotiating terms and resolving issues related to payment services, including fees, transaction disputes, and service-level agreements.
  • Liaise with the Payment Operations group and external parties (payment processors, banks, and other financial institutions) to resolve issues or discrepancies.

Team Leadership and Development:
  • Foster a collaborative and results-driven team environment.
  • Provide exemplary oversight, guidance, and training. Develop strong and effective relationships within the finance team, across the organization, and with peers in other organizations.
  • Ensure the integrity of all financial systems and facilitate proper training and guidance to functional departments on using various systems and assisting with reporting needs.

Qualifications:

Educational & Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA designation required.

Experience:
  • 10+ years in an accounting function, with 5+ years in a role within payments, fintech, or financial services.
  • Experience with full-cycle reporting of money movement flows.
  • Proven experience performing reconciliation activities for a licensed money transmitter or a chartered State/Provincial/Federal bank.
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory framework and its impact on safeguarding and managing funds.
  • Financial audit experience preferred.

Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with Xero or similar platforms (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite).
  • Experience liaising with payment processing platforms.
  • Proficiency with data analytics tools preferred.
