Principal Scientist Summary: Principal Scientists direct or manage projects with potentially high stakes, requiring thoughtful application of the appropriate technical disciplines and professional judgment. They oversee the scope and quality of service delivery from the beginning to the end of a project, by ensuring that the team is aware of, and addresses the client's needs. They guide individual project team contributors at various experience levels as part of their daily work. A Principal Scientist is responsible for business development, client relationships, consistent activity in professional and peer settings, and participation in the Visible Firm/ Visible Expert marketing program at EH&E. Primary Duties & Responsibilities : Project Management:
  • Provides exceptional service and consulting to clients by identifying potential opportunities for improvement and developing solutions.
  • Contributes to managing operations within their department to ensure the effective delivery of services.
Personnel Management/Training & Mentoring:
  • Leads teams of consultants on client-based projects of significant complexity, sensitivity, or scope.
  • Mentors and trains existing and new employees in his/her work group.
  • Works with other managers to identify and deliver professional development needs for staff.
  • Encourages optimal performance, professional growth, and engagement of team members.
Sales/Client Relations:
  • Develops close working relationships with key members of client organization.
  • Understands the key drivers of the client's business and opportunities to anticipate and enhance their operations and manage risks.
  • Designs, schedules, analyzes, and constructs solutions that meet the specifications of client needs.
  • Builds and maintains contacts and relations with key clients.
  • Collaborates with Managing Principal Consultants and Market Executives to plan and coordinate resources for business development and project execution.
Quality Assurance:
  • Achieves quality standards sufficient to withstand legal scrutiny.
  • Responsible for all aspects of technical approach and study design.
  • Evaluates existing QA/QC processes; makes and recommends improvements.
  • Collaborates with MPCs, PCs, and MEs to ensure that advances in capabilities and knowledge are shared across the company.
Customer Satisfaction:
  • Responsible for meeting customer satisfaction standards for all projects managed.
  • Takes initiative on client disputes, should they arise.
Communication & Reports:
  • Prepares and reviews technical scientific reports and documents that satisfy criteria for expert opinions admitted as evidence into federal and state court proceedings.
  • Expert in verbal communication of proposals, findings, and recommendations.
Financial Management:
  • Ensures the effectiveness and profitability of projects performed by her/his team.
  • Meets project multiples and identifies and implements process changes to improve project profitability and efficiency.
  • Contributes to investment projects in the allotted time frame; identifies market opportunities.
  • Works with MPCs and Finance on managing A/R for projects managed.
  • Attains individual objectives and goals.
Technical Expertise:
  • Expert knowledge of environmental science, industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, toxicology, epidemiology, human health risk assessment, and related subject matter.
  • Able to oversee all aspects of project deliverables.
  • Can manage complex projects and act with experience, knowledge leadership, efficiency, people skills, and business acumen.
  • Ability to integrate data and information across disciplines and make relevant and accurate recommendations.
  • Leads or contributes to communications in peer-reviewed journals and other settings.
  • Contributes to the culture of EH&E and continually strives for excellence in work products, while acting proactively and fairly with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Master's degree required.
  • PhD/ScD preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience required.
  • Nationally recognized expert in their field required.
  • Qualified as an expert witness in federal or state court preferred.
  • Successful defense against Daubert challenge or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated report writing experience that meets criteria for federal and state court.
