The major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs venipuncture on outpatients and inpatients;
Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions while drawing blood;
Instructs patients in proper procedure for 24-hour urine collection;
Collects specimens based on urgency designation of STAT, ASAP, TIMED and ROUTINE regardless of location;
Receives and verifies required collection information and accessions appropriate orders for laboratory testing;
Recognizes emergency situations and takes necessary action;
Prepares specimens, operates centrifuges and other minor equipment within the laboratory for specimen processing and delivery to testing areas;
Answers incoming calls for Laboratory Services;
Performs chain of custody drug collections;
Prepares specimens and performs send-out/referral testing procedures for tests not performed in-house;
Maintains adequate supplies (tubes, needles, syringes, alcohol, labels, etc.) in all laboratory phlebotomy areas, collection carts and collection baskets;
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:
Tuesday through Saturday, hours to be determined.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
