Position Summary: The CNA provides direct and indirect patient care for inpatient units that meet the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care; meets the communication needs of patients and families; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. With guidance, may provide clerical support to a patient facing department/and or team.


Essential Duties:

• Provides direct patient care, collects data, consults with other health team members as required and adjusts nursing

care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.

• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status.

• Performs all aspects of patient care, in an environment that optimizes patient safety reducing the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Patient care to include bed bath, shower or whirlpool, oral hygiene, foley care, back care, prepares patients for meals; serves/removes food trays, distributes drinking water, changes bed linens, and general straightening of room.

• Provides general nursing care: positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment (once trained), assisting patients with the bedpan, commode, assists ambulating patients, finger stick blood sugars. Uses correct body mechanics.

• Answers patient call lights, anticipates patient’s needs and makes rounds to assigned patients, updates communication board, as needed.

• Assists patients with the handling of personal property: dentures, eyewear, hearing aids, prosthetic devices.

• Reports and when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients and unusual incidents.

• Assists in the preparation of admissions, transfers, post ops, and discharge of patients.

• Assists RN’s with treatment procedures.

• Checks patient for reddened areas or skin breakdown, performs simple dressing changes, applies oxygen as delegated by the RN.

• Obtains and records temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight, intake and output, empties foley’s and drains as delegated by the RN.

• Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.

• Performs 1:1 care to patients as delegated by the RN.

• Demonstrates ability to collect data regarding patient pain status. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.

• Communicates appropriately and clearly to all team members and physicians, including attending report with next shift.

• Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a RN.

• Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.

• Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.

• Assists in formulating a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and assists in evaluating effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.

• Demonstrates ability to contribute to the plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment.

• Maintains confidentiality.


CNA Tech duties assigned after 1 year of experience and additional training:

• Performs electrocardiogram.

• Performs venipuncture for blood collection-only in the Emergency Department.

• Performs a straight catheter procedure on an adult patient, 18 years of age or older.

• Provides gastro-intestinal tube (G-tube) and percutaneous gastrostomy (PEG) gravity tube feedings only to an established G-Tube or PEG Tube on an adult patient 18 years or older.

• Assists patient with established continuous passive motion therapy (CPM)-excluding the Emergency Department.

• Performs a bladder scan on an adult patient 18 years or older.

• Obtain a swab for surveillance culture.


Department Assistant duties:

• Assist with the day to day clerical duties.

• Provides support to the Providers and clinical team members.

• Answers phones and routes calls to appropriate Providers and team members.

• Greets visitors, patients, and family members and shares information as appropriate.

• Supports patient flow.

• Cleans and organizes rolling stock such as wheelchairs, gurneys, and IV poles. Recognizes the need for maintenance of such equipment and sends for repairs as needed.

• Performs all other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

• Current C.N.A certification in State of Maine

• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required within 6 months of hire

• Prior medical office experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred

• Demonstrated proficiency with data entry/keyboarding

• Basic computer skills

• Ability to organize a daily workload by priorities

• Strong written and verbal skills

• Ability to use computers and other technical systems required to perform job functions

• Additional languages preferred


Typical Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Physically demanding, high stress environment.

• Exposure to blood and body fluids.

• Pushing and pulling heavy objects.

• Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.

• Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing.

• Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.

• Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift or carry.
