Example Job Responsibilities:

Handling pretrial, trial and post-trial matters in Magistrate CourtHanding prosecution of multiple charges including ordinances, criminal and other violationsProviding legal advice to government departments and elected and appointed officials as assignedHandling appeals to the Circuit Court and S.C. appellate courts Prepares case for court by conducting and responding to discovery, interviewing, and preparing witnesses and reviewing case documentation and reports from other sources. Pleadings and proposed orders shall include all determinations required by state and federal law. Utilizes or ensures the utilization of the Legal Case Management System for legal operations and documentation of legal activity in cases.Reviews legislation, statutory changes, and case law decisions and advises staff about the law.

Minimum and Additional Qualifications:

A JD from an accredited law school and a member of the SC Bar in good standing3 years of experience practicing as an attorneyExperience in South Carolina criminal courts, prosecution experience preferredExperience as an attorney in a government setting is preferred.Knowledge of and experience in litigation and criminal and civil procedure rulesStrong legal writing skills Able to supervise and motivate employeesDetail-oriented with strong calendaring skillsAbility to interpret and apply law and judicial decisions. Ability to analyze and synthesize facts, evidence and legal theory and to understand and craft legal pleadings, discovery, and proposed orders.Ability to express arguments and conclusions clearly and logically.May require travel throughout the Charleston area, working more than 40 hours per week when needed, and lifting boxes of documents.
