Position Overview
Sheridan Correctional Center is seeking an experienced Carpenter for their facility.  As the Carpenter, you will perform general carpentry and maintenance work while guiding a group of individuals in custody who assist with daily tasks.  This position will make the facility more functionable while addressing challenges in the skill of carpentry work in older type structures.  We encourage all qualified applicants .

Job Responsibilities

-Performs general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction, and alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, interior and exterior furniture, fencing, sidewalk, or other similar structures.
-Safely and efficiently instructs individuals in custody in an array of carpentry tasks.
-Maintains and checks all assigned tools.
-Plans and estimates projects pertaining to carpentry trade.
-Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

-Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
-Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Preferred Qualifications

-Prefers at least five (5) years of experience performing general carpentry in a workplace.
-Prefers OSHA 10 training or higher.
-Prefers at least three (3) years of experience mentoring a group of individuals in carpentry tasks in a workplace environment.
-Prefers at least two (2) years of experience compiling materials lists needed to complete projects.
-Prefers at least two (2) years reading and deciphering blueprints, sketches, and layouts for projects.
-Prefers at least two (2) years of composing reports as needed.
-Prefers at least two (2) years of performing preventative maintenance in the field of carpentry.

Conditions of Employment

-Requires ability to lift and carry items weighing up to and including 50lbs without assistance.
-Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
-Requires ability to pass a drug screen.  The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
-Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
