Under the direction of a Nurse Manager and a Service Chief, the Registered Nurse (RN) - Chemotherapy Infusion professional is at full level performance and functions as a member of the nursing care team who is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
The RN is self-directed in providing nursing care to a variety of patients/residents of ages across the adult continuum to manage monitoring requirements for specific drugs, handling immediate infusion reactions, and preventing and managing oncology-related symptoms and adverse events, such as chemo-related symptoms and immune-related adverse events.
The Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse functions as a charge nurse/team leader; the Oncology/Hematology Clinic works closely with the Chemo unit.
Other duties may include but are not limited to:
Uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems with measurable outcomes.
Draw lab specimens, verify lab results, verify chemo using the two-person process and administer chemotherapy (including research drugs).
Completes physiological assessments and completes documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance to established policies and procedures.
Triages patient problems and assists in the evaluation of symptoms and initiate interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Assess pain, complete blood transfusions/IV hydrations as needed and document all treatment.
Ensure knowledge for treatment of extravasation, spill kit and emergency cart; set-up and assist with phlebotomies.
Call Blood Bank and monitor patient during phlebotomies; Exit all patients.
Conducts in-service education based on insights gained from oncology professional development activities and acquiring specialized skills in oncology-specific areas, including chemotherapy administration, oncology electronic ordering systems, and calculating drug dosages
Monitors, tracks/tends, and reports ongoing care needs and outcomes to the interdisciplinary team.
Potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments.
