The University of Rhode Island College of Arts and Sciences and its Harrington School of Communication and Media seek a Chair who can oversee the development of a new academic department encompassing degree programs in both Journalism and Public Relations. This individual will have a robust and significant program of relevant research as well as demonstrated excellence in curricular innovation, committee or program management, inclusive mentoring and teaching, and a sustained, proactive commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and collaborative working and learning environment.

This appointment will be made at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. Current Associate Professors whose record is commensurate with earning tenure and promotion to Full Professor at the University of Rhode Island upon hire are encouraged to apply.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Lead the establishment of and chair a new academic department that will house existing degree programs in Journalism and Public Relations.
● Collaborate with faculty from both programs, Harrington School leadership, and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s office to coordinate curricular, administrative, and personnel management dimensions of the new department.
● Mentor, nurture, and evaluate junior and senior faculty, teaching professors, and part time instructors.
● Teach, advise, and undertake curriculum development as well as committee service.
● Maintain momentum as a scholar through ongoing research in the field of relevance.
● Establish and institutionalize external relationships with program alumni, industry, and civic entities.
● Nurture field-relevant experiential learning opportunities for students.
● Promote program visibility on campus, in the region, and beyond into the nation and world.
● Foster a culture of grant-driven innovation in scholarship, teaching, and outreach.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ph.D. in Journalism or Public Relations or a terminal degree in a related field.

2. Research record of past and ongoing scholarly distinction in Journalism or Public Relations or a related communication/media field.

3. Demonstrated strength in classroom teaching, academic advising, and inclusive pedagogy for a diverse student population.

4. Sustained fidelity to campus and professional service and/or outreach over the span of the career.

5. Experience as a full professor or exceptional record at current rank of advanced associate professor.

6. Documented potential for success in leadership at the department, college, or university level.

7. Evidence of well-developed professional communication skills.

8. Record of successful curriculum revision and development, including creation, proposal, and implementation of new courses.

9. Ongoing engagement with and proven commitment to promoting a just, equitable, and inclusive educational and working environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Prior and successful leadership of an academic department or unit in transition.

2. Experience securing external funding for research or research-based outreach endeavors.

3. Success engaging professional journalism or public relations organizations.
