Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):

  • Lead daily guided hikes and/or paddles, demonstrating outstanding customer service to ensure a top-rate guest experience
  • Maintain safety of group at all times by communicating procedures, expectations, and processes quickly and clearly, especially if adjustments must be made due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances
  • Scan, at all times, for potential hazards and decisively act to protect the safety of the entire group
  • Take guests on occasional multi-day guided kayaking or backpacking trips, assuring the trip adheres to the advertised itinerary (weather permitting)
  • For multi-day trips, prepare meals and ensure safe food handling 
  • Help prepare for and clean up after all activities (put up/take down tents, load and unload bedrolls, clean/organize gear, etc.)
  • Communicate pertinent information to all guests in an upbeat and efficient manner (greet guests, provide pre-trip safety information, conduct orientations and debriefs, and address guest expectations)
  • Read social cues and adjust activities based on group needs
  • Lead compelling conversations with guests about Ghost Ranch history, flora and fauna, geology, paleontology, and Georgia O’Keeffe 
  • Serve as an attentive lifeguard, potentially providing swim lessons when needed throughout the season
  • Lead low-ropes course activities for a variety of groups, adhering to all certification safety standards and guidelines
  • Participate in trainings to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for guests and co-workers throughout the season
  • Complete all required documentation, including pre-activity guest liability forms, post-trip reports, incident forms, and expense reports
  • Assist in calling guests if weather causes an activity cancellation

Terms:

The Outdoor Adventure Guide is a seasonal position for 14 weeks (approximately mid-May to mid-Aug or from mid-June to mid-Sept). This position is for 40 hours/week and requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays; seasonal guides receive a stipend of $400/week plus meals and rustic housing with a shared bathroom. This position is subject to Ghost Ranch personnel policies.
