The Optometrist will see clinic patients with a wide variety of eye care needs. The incumbent will provide eye care as delineated in the clinical privilege list for Optometrist. This will include, but not limited to, examination of the eye, lids, adnexa, and the visual system; providing basic low vision evaluation and services; and diagnosis, management and treatment of refractive conditions, binocular function, ocular disease and conditions, and ocular complications of systemic disorders. The incumbent will be expected to provide high quality and efficient eye care in a multidisciplinary health care team setting.

Clinical Functions:
Responsible for for examining, diagnosing and performing specific optometric treatments for conditions of the vision system. Treat eye conditions by prescribing and adapting spectacle lenses, contact lenses, optical aids, as well as low vision rehabilitation. Orders and interprets laboratory, radiographic and other imaging studies as appropriate to the optometric discipline. Referrals of patients to other ophthalmology subspecialties and/or health professionals for further diagnosis and treatments as needed.

Educational Functions:
Acts as a teacher and mentor to physicians and technicians in appropriate examination, eye care and management of ocular diseases. Also acts as the exclusive source for the dissemination of information regarding optometry to patients seen within the facility.

Administrative Functions:
Planning, coordinating and exercising professional judgement in initiating and implementing administrative and clinical decisions. Incumbent maintains channels of communication between optometry and all other clinical and administrative services, tertiary VA facilities, community hospitals, and area ophthalmologists to ensure that all Veterans needing optometric services will be able to access them to the greatest degree possible. Assures compliance with accrediting agencies and with medical staff by laws, rules, policies and regulations.

Preferred Experience:

Board Certified/Board Eligible in Optometry
Four years of optometric practice or its equivalent
Diagnosis and treatment of unusual and complicated visual dysfunctions
Diagnose and treat ocular disease
Use corneal diagnostic modalities, such as slit lamp, topography, pachymetry, photography, and confocal microscopy to detect, characterize, and document corneal pathologies
